Elafonissi
Elafonissi is in west Crete, 75 kilometres southwest of Chania. The Elafonissi area includes the beach, the islet 200 metres offshore and the shallow lagoon between the two. If you come to Crete on holiday, Elafonissi is a name you are sure to hear. Elafonissi is a tiny island with white sand, separated from the shore by a lagoon no more than a metre deep.

Driving from Paleochora to Elafonisi A lovely scenic drive through the South West of Crete, Chania prefecture. We advise you take the road inland and then west as this is in good condition for driving. The coast road takes twice the time and is not paved. Best done by foot and not by car (see the hike - route - path from Paleochora to Elafonisi).When you arrive you will see one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Coral in the sand makes the water colour surreal. Try and leave early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds in high season.Once there, cross over to the island by foot through the water – here there will be less people.How to get there: Take the road to Hania. After a short while (15-20 minutes) you will reach a village called Plemenania. Here you will see a sign indicating Elafonisi. Follow the direction by turning left. Follow the windy road until you see a junction. Go in the direction of the village Strovles. As you proceed you will cross a bridge, continue on to the village of Elos – a beautiful village and valley of Chestnut and Olive trees. Then head for the villages Louhi followed by Kefali. Look for the sign in Greek for Elafonisi – EΛΑΦΟΝΗΣΙ. It is a sharp turn to the left Pass the villages Vathi and Plokomaniana villages As you continue the sea will come into view. If you want to see the Monastery Chrissoskalitissa then you will need to follow the turn off where indicated before the Elafonisi village. The beach has a huge car park. You need to walk a short distance to enjoy its beauty. To return another way retrace your way back through all the villages until Strovles. From here take the road to Voutas and follow signs back to Paleochora.Time: 1 1/2 hours Distance: 50 kms
Places near Elafonissi
The secret treasure that lies a few kilometers southeast from Elafonissi, “Kedrodasos”, (cedar forest) is one of the few coastal forests in Greece. Kedrodasos forest is located in west Crete, Chania Prefecture and 78 km far from Chania City.
Kedrodasos is located very close to Elafonissi island - beach and the road which leads to that magical place is a dirt road, perpendicular to the main road. Following the dirt road, we stop at a small square and from there and as we walk along a path, after a few seconds, we see a beach of amazing beauty.
The cedars reach the beach and they are the only tenants. There you will find neither sun beds as at Elafonissi nor canteens, so you should obtain the necessary things. Away from the noise of an organized beach, Kedrodasos offers the perfect setting for an alternative escape. The region, however, demands attention and respect. Please, do not throw any garbage in this little paradise, and certainly do not cut even a small sprig of a cedar tree as it grows just one centimetre in a year!
The picture is unique as the beauty and tranquillity of the place continues to surprise the senses even when the moon has taken the position of the sun.
