Lesbos is a Greek island located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Greek island and the largest of the numerous Greek islands scattered in the Aegean. The population is about 100,000 and the capital city is Mytilene in the southeastern part of the island. Mytiline is the administrative centre of the Prefecture of Lesvos and the seat of the University of the Aegean. The island is divided in 13 Municipalities. The meaning of the word lesbian derives from the poems of Sappho, who was born in Lesbos. The poems contain powerful emotional content directed toward other females and have frequently been interpreted as expressing homosexuality. It is due to this association that Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, is popular by some people. Lesbos is an island of fantastic sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and ancient architecture. Keeping its Greek flavour while being a popular holiday destination.
