Epano Pervolakia in Sitia. Desolation and abandonment. Only one resident. Without water, without light. Silence interrupted only by the bells and the bleating of sheep.

Agia Sofia Monastery is located close to Armeni village, Sitia region by Handras plateau, not far away from the historical site of the Venetian town of Etia. This interesting monastic complex survives in its largest part in ruins. The catholicon, however, is preserved well. It belongs to the type of single-nave barrel-vaulted church with two transverse reinforcing arches. In a second construction phase the church was expanded westward with a slightly elevated arched narthex, which, following the usual practice prevailing in eastern Crete, is openly connected to the main church.

No frescoes are preserved inside the church that could contribute to the dating of the monument, but it seems that both the Catholicon and the rest of the monastic complex should be dated to the Ottoman period. The monastery is currently inactive and belongs to the Parish of Armeni.

The Canyon of Pervolakia or Monastery of Kapsas
We have already reported previously on the significance of the biodiversity of this landscape. There are lots of rare endemic species and geological structures that make up a wild and imposing canyon.

Hiking can easily be completed without any special problems, except for very few spots where the hiker needs to be very careful. The length of the canyon is about 4 kilometres and its entrance is in the south of  Pervolakia village while its exit lies at the beach of the monastery of  Kapsas.

Kapsa or Pervolakia gorge in Makrigialos: A very beautiful gorge close to the well known monastery of Kapsa in South-eastern Crete between Goudouras Village and Makrigialos. The Kapsa Gorge or Pervolakia Gorge is 9 kms far from Makri Gialos and 35 kms far from Sitia. The access is easy, through a very good asphalted road.

In a desolate, wild and dry landscape this very beautiful gorge is shaped. It starts by Kapsa monastery and after 3,5 kms ends to the isolated, traditional settlement Pervolakia. The route is relatively easy to be accessed, though there are some bluff grades that need some more attention when you descend. Though there are signs you have to be careful, when you walk on the bed of the gorge. Kapsa gorge in Makrigialos Kapsa gorge in Makrigialos Kapsa gorge in Makrigialos You need about 2 hours walking from the start of the gorge to the Pervolakia settlement and about 1.5 hours to return. The entrance of the gorge is about 100m far from the blue clear waters of Libyan Sea. Refreshing swimming at pebbled beach of Kapsa can go together with your hiking in the gorge. Kapsa gorge in Makrigialos

Koimisi tis Theotokou (Dormition of Mother Mary) (Armenoi)

The originally arch-covered church was later expanded with the addition of a narthex. The remarkable icons in its chancel screen date back to the 18th and 19th century

Agia Ekaterini and Genessio tis Theotokou (St. Catherine & Nativity of Mary) (Armenoi)

The church of Saint Catherine is located in the abandoned village of Etia, close to the impressive Venetian mansion Dei Mezzo.

It is a two-aisled church dedicated to Saint Catherine and the Virgin Mary. The original aisle was adorned with murals. The church’s architecture and sophisticated decorative elements betray Renaissance influence, and its relief-decorated belfry is particularly impressive. In all likelihood, the church has served as both Catholic and Orthodox.

Agios Georgios (St. George) (Armenoi)

A single-space arch-covered church, Saint George was subsequently expanded with a narthex. The church was likely built during the late Byzantine era. Its murals date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and depict scenes from the Christological cycle.
