This very traditional village is part of the municipality of Armeni and has about 100 permanent residents. The villagers are nearly all involved in farming / agriculture of some king and lead a relatively simple life.
A gorgeous village set on a hill to the southwest of Apokoronas region, with lovely views to the north of Souda Bay and the verdant Armeni valley, to the south of the White Mountains, to the east of the conifer rich Vrisses valley, and to the west of a tiny gorge which has beautifully coloured walls.
Many original village houses have been lovingly renovated, and the village has a chapel cut into a cave in a cliff face. The natural amphitheatre is the perfect place for a few traditional music events during the summer months. 3 minutes by car to Neo Horio, 5 minutes to Armeni, and 10 minutes to the National Highway and the sandy beaches at Kalives.
The village is located in Apokoronas region, Chania Prefecture, West Crete. There are references of Neo Horio back to at least the 16th century. In the upper neighborhood of the village there is an interesting complex of a feudal residence first built during the early Venetian period and reconstructed during the Ottoman period. In the complex there is an olive oil-press, storage rooms and the residence, which was the property of the feudal Saridis family. It is also worth visiting the Koule, a fortress built over Venetian ruins during the Turkish occupation, located on the hill south from the village, as well as the small church of St. Gerasimos, carved inside a rock and dated back to the 17th century.Visitors in Neo Horio may rest in the big square where an old plane tree and a well of the Turkish period stand, and enjoy the products of the region.
