Fourni 2756 hits
Fourni is a complex of islands located between Ikaria and Samos islands. It has a small port hosting ferries and excursion vessels. The capital and the port share the island’s name and extend around the narrow bay. This insular complex comprises twenty small islands, Fournous, Thymena (that occupies the western part of the complex) and many surrounding rocky islets that add magic to an already unique landscape. The most famous rocky islets are Agios Minas, Alatonisi, Mikros and Megalos Anthropofas, Thymenaki, Kisiria, Makronisi, Petrokaravo, Plakaki and Strogilo.

Fourni complex is scattered across countless bays, coves and fjords with blue waters, creating a magic world, ideal anchorage for ships and yachts. It is no surprise that this complex was chosen in ancient times by pirates to be their anchor point. The islands’ perimeter reaches 120 km and shows us that these small islands have a beauty of their own, with impressive beaches, numerous small or big coves, picturesque bays and fjords, offering anchorage to local boats or visitors and countless caves across their coastline that captivate visitors at first sight.

Fourni is a complex of twenty islands located between Ikaria and Samos islands. In ancient times, Fourni was known as Korasioi Islands (this name is still used for the rocky islet of Korasida). Porfyrios, a philosopher of the Hellenistic Era (1st century AD), referred to them as Korseas, a name that is saved to our days.

The Miletians (Ionians) were the first to colonise the island due to the quarries and they were traveling there to procure rocks and build the opposite Miletus. During the byzantine and medieval times, pirates chose this island to be their anchor point. There are many legends of treasures.

In any case, people fled the island at that time and it was only in 1770 that the island was re-inhabited and obtained the structure and form that it has today. The first houses built were huts. Each hut was long and narrow, built from slate rocks and roofs were covered with beams and juniper tree (a type of wood found on the island). This mode of construction was called “dora”. Houses now have fireplace, recesses in the walls with containers keeping the goods produced, specially built bed that was waterproof and are furnished with wooden furniture (sofra tables and stools). The first house in the plain was built in 1885 and it has survived until today. Today the island’s Chora has beautiful narrow alleys, traditional taverns and modern houses with apparent influences from the past.

Numerous monuments witness to the long-standing history of the island:

Acropolis: Ancient parts of the acropolis were found on Saint George’s hill, right above the Fourni settlement, unique evidence of the island’s tradition. The biggest parts of the acropolis that are saved until today are 2 m. wide. The view is captivating, with the ruins of the past, such as those that are carved on the remains, making this site unique.

Sarcophagus: Found in a field at the Chora of Fourni. Today it is displayed at the village’s square. It has perfect parallelepiped shape with embossed decorations and epigraph.

Latomio (quarry): Important site at Petrokopi bay, very close to Fourni. It includes semi-finished, archaeological parts scattered across the wider bay area, such as columns’ shafts, a capital of the ionic order as well as rectangular parallelepipeds in perfect shapes.

Kamari: At the courtyard of Taksiarches’ church, one can find stripped, granite columns and rectangular marble plates. At the coast you will find the remains of the ancient settlement.
