Venetian Fountain of Panagia 2531 hits

A remarkable Venetian fountain is located at the fairly big settlement of Panagia, dating at least from the early Venetian times. The fountain is located at the center of the village and limestone has been used for its building. There are also some Venetian facilities and warehouses in the settlement. So the settlement of Panagia was proved to be a focal point for the Venetians that ruled the area, probably due to the significant cereal production in the wider region.

Fabrica (Factory) in Panagia 2522 hits

It does not come as a surprise that in a very old settlement, dating from the first Venetian period and well known for its rich oil production, there is quite some infrastructure for producing olive oil. The existence and operation of an oil press at the village of Panagia has been widely known, however it is interesting that a traditional oil press has been converted into a visiting area. It is an old factory that keeps its machinery, a so-called fabrica, which reminds us of the cultural heritage of the village. The Fabrica has been purchased by the Cultural Association of Panagia, who have been responsible for its restoration. Nowadays you can visit it with a free entrance.

Archaeological site of Prophet Elias 2521 hits

Archaeological site of Prophet Elias
Valuable archaeological findings have been brought to light by archaeologists on the hill of Prophet Elias in Arkalohori.

After the first excavations at the Minoan cave of Prophet Elias one hundred years ago, which revealed the famous gold and bronze double axes and swords and most of the metallic archaeological findings of the Minoan Period, there has been an effort to highlight the archaeological site of the hill of Prophet Elias and particularly the eastern and southern side.

The attempt has shown that the hill had been inhabited from the Minoan era until the Ottoman period. The most striking of all is the background and the morphology of the excavation. There is a huge limestone rock that forms the bedrock of the hill of Prophet Elias. There are dozens of carved floors and walls on this rock and they can probably be hundreds of them after the completion of the excavation. These are placed from east to west.

There are also carved column bases on these floors, bases for placing cone-shaped jars and holes (possibly mortars) within the stone. Elsewhere, always carved in stone, you can see benches or basins or depressions of unknown significance. Among these floors, which are probably bases for houses or workshops, there are also carved in stone stairs or corridors. Moreover in some places drain pipes are skillfully integrated into the rock. After the excavation, the purpose and the function of these pipelines have been apparent this year with the first rains. The excavation revealed many important findings, such as coins from the Archaic period to modern times, pottery from all periods and various tools. All these will be probably presented by the archaeological services at an appropriate time in the future.
