(Greek: Γέργερη) is the seat of Rouvas municipality in Heraklion Prefecture in the Greek island of Crete. The population was 1,809 in 2001. Approximately 17 km west of Agia Varvara and 4 km east of Zaros you will meet Gergeri village, an attractive village, famous since antiquity for its spring waters.
At the edge of the village, on the road to Kamares, there is a bottling plant, where the mineral water of Gergeri is bottled and distributed all over Crete. You can buy traditional delicacies and garden products from the agricultural cooperative, which was founded by the local women of Gergeri.
If you take one of the paths, beyond the hills of Gergeri, you will soon discover the oldest oak forest of Crete: The forest of Rouvas, now an officially protected area. During the Greek War of Independence the Commissioner of Crete, Emmanouil Tombazis, gathered 3,000 Cretans in Gergeri to face a force of 12,000 Turkish-Egyptian soldiers at Agia Varvara. On August 20, 1823 and despite a valiant defence against the much larger and better organised force, the Cretans had to retreat after losing 300 men in the battle at the village of Amourgielles.
