Vizari (41km far from Rethimno city) was an important village during the Venetian Occupation. Its inhabitants founded the village called Fourfouras. Platis River at Vizari village supplies a reservoir that is useful for irrigative activities.

The village of Vizari is in the middle of the verdurous plain of Asomathianos Kampos and it has 111 residents and belongs to the Municipality of Kourites. Olive oil and stockbreeding products are the main products of this village. It is mentioned to belong to the county of Amari in 1577 by Fr.Barozzi Visari. It is also mentioned by Kastrofilakas with the name Visari, 130 residents 183 due chores in 1583, and by Vasilakatas with the name Visari in 1630. Its rich findings, architectural parts, sculptures, pottery and other items are in the Museum of Rethymno.

At Vizari one can see, the remains of a Roman town and an early Christian church. The Roman ruins are in a pretty decrepit state though, overgrown and lost in the lush greenery. In these ruins there is sundial with latin numbers.

Further up the valley to the East is the pretty village of Fourfouras (2km far) where walkers can head off along waymarked tracks into the Psiloritis Mountains

Fourfouras. A beautiful, full of greenery village built on the top of a rock on a height of 460 m at the foot of Psiloritis, looks like a fortress. That is why it is called Fourfouras. A remarkable church in the area is one of Virgin Mary Kardiotissa of the Byzantine Period, which some time ago was a convent, with marvelous frescos of the 14th-15th century.

The village who is built on the western part of Mt. Psiloritis, is noted for its revolutionary action during the Greek struggle of 1821 and 1866. Near Apodoulos village there are still Minoan settlements and graves. In Vizari village, you can visit the woodcarving workshops. From Fourfouras and from Kouroutes village a mountaineering route leads you to the stone-build Holy Cross church at the highest peak of Mt. Psiloritis.

The road continues with a few turns and gets to Kouroutes on a height of 510 m.
