West from the village of Agia Varvara, the geographical center of Crete, there is a road that leads to the south flanks of Mount Ida and after 4km to the Panassos or Panasos Village (16 km east from Zaros). This is a lovely drive on an empty and relatively good road.
After Panassos village: Gergeri, Zaros, Moni Vrondisiou, Moni Valsamonerou, the Kamares Cave are just some of the wonderful sites you will be able to discover during this trip.After a while, you will see on your left Panasso. Here legend meets History. There are indications about ancient towns, caves that served to worship, but also proofs about excavation of rocks in large sizes, etc. Entering the village you will see the cafe of Vagelio Foukaki’s company. At the right of the village you can see the churches Agia Paraskevi (five-domed) and Panagia (Virgin Mary) Kardiotissa.
In the area in the Roman era baths functioned, which got water from the small springs situated in the east. Water passes through gypsum rocks and is enhanced with sulfurous ions and other elements provoking a myorelaxation effect.
Περίπου 1 χλμ έξω από το χωριό και πάνω σε ένα λόφο, βρίσκεται εποχιακή φυσική λίμνη, "Στου Διγενή το μνήμα", γνωστή και ως "Βρωμολίμνη", η οποία τον χειμώνα συγκεντρώνει νερό και το καλοκαίρι ξεραίνεται και δίπλα της τεχνητή λιμνοδεξαμενή, η οποία τροφοδοτείται από τις πηγές της Γέργερης. Σε αυτήν την περιοχή έχουν καταγραφεί περίπου 63 είδη πουλιών και αναμένεται να αυξηθεί, καθώς οι λίμνες βρίσκονται σε σημαντικό μεταναστευτικό διάδρομο
