Above Kokkino Horio in Apokoronas Region is the strangely shaped hill Drapanokefala or Calapodha (so named during the Venetian occupation) and the Drapano Cape.
The coast line around Kokkino Horio village is also a great place to visit. There are caves (such as the cave of Petsi or Karavotopo. Another cave called Katalimata, located at the centre of the village) in a number of places and what I believe is officially known as ‘Koutalas cove’ is a great place to visit. Go down the hill northeast from the village and head towards the sea and Drapano cape.
After a kilometre or so you will see the road to the tiny headland where there is some sort of radio antenna used by the Greek Navy. Before you reach the antenna, take the left turn down to the coast. You will find yourself looking down to a tiny bay with a small beach.
Koutalas cove is usually empty during the week and it’s a great place to swim and snorkel. You can drive down the windy road to the beach. If you’re very brave you can climb around the rocks and jump the 15 or so metres in to the sea. Failing that, just swim. It’s a beautiful place.
At cape Drapano, approximately 10 metres under water, is the impressive Elephant Cave, an area 60mx60m full of stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and colours.

Στο Κόκκινο χωριό στην επαρχία Αποκορώνου, 29 χιλιόμετρα ανατολικά των Χανιών και μόλις 11 χλμ από το κέντρο του Βάμου, βρίσκεται η παραλία του Κουταλά ή Κουτάλης.
Μια σχετικά ήσυχη, βραχώδης παραλία που την επισκέπτονται συνήθως οικογένειες από τα γειτονικά χωριά καθώς και λίγοι πιο ενημερωμένοι παραθεριστές. Επίσης είναι ιδανική για τους λάτρεις της εξερεύνησης, λόγω της ιδιόμορφης περιοχής, στην οποία βρίσκονται ορισμένα υπέροχα σπήλαια όπως η Σπηλιά των Ελεφάντων ή του Πετσή το Σπήλιο που ενδείκνυνται για περιπλάνηση.
Η παραλία είναι στενή ενώ τα νερά της περικλείονται από την βραχώδη περιοχή και καταλήγουν σε ένα μικρό φιόρδ. Είναι γενικά απομονωμένη παραλία με λίγους επισκέπτες και γαλήνια μπλε-πράσινα νερά που δημιουργούν ένα ονειρεμένο σκηνικό, ειδικά όταν η θάλασσα είναι ήρεμη!
Στην παραλία συχνά θα συναντήσει κανείς και ομάδες δυτών που εξερευνούν τον θαλάσσιο κόσμο ή κάνουν τα πρώτα τους καταδυτικά μαθήματα! Υπάρχει επίσης ένα στέγαστρο που προσφέρει την μοναδική σκιά για να προστατευτεί κανείς από τον ήλιο αλλά συνάμα και βραχώδης σημεία που προσφέρονται για ηλιοθεραπεία και πολλές βουτιές!
Για να έρθει κανείς ως εδώ πρέπει να πάρει κατεύθυνση βόρεια προς Κόκκινο χωριό και να προχωρήσει προς τον φάρο στην μύτη του ακρωτηρίου. Πλέον υπάρχουν ταμπέλες που θα σας οδηγήσουν προς την παραλία.
Μία βουτιά στα υπέροχα νερά του Κουταλά αξίζει να συνδυαστεί με μια βόλτα μέχρι το φάρο στην άκρη του ακρωτηρίου, ο οποίος κατασκευάστηκε το 1864.
Επίσης στο Κόκκινο χωριό θα βρείτε παραδοσιακά ταβερνάκια με πεντανόστιμους μεζέδες καθώς μετά το μπάνιο σας το πιο πιθανό είναι να έχει ανοίξει η όρεξη, καθώς και καφενείο για τον πρωινό η απογευματινό καφέ σας!
Ένα εργοστάσιο γυαλιού με χειροποίητα έργα τέχνης βρίσκεται επίσης στο χωριό που αξίζει να επισκεφτείτε ώστε να θαυμάσετε και να αγοράσετε πανέμορφα δημιουργήματα.
Σε μικρή απόσταση υπάρχουν αρκετές άλλες όμορφες και πιο οργανωμένες παραλίες, όπως των Καλυβών, της Αλμυρίδας και της Γεωργιούπολης και παραδοσιακά χωριά για εξερεύνηση και περιπλάνηση στους ντόπιους ρυθμούς!

Η Αλμυρίδα είναι μια οικογενειακή παραλία 23 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη των Χανίων και 2 χιλιόμετρα από το χωριό Καλύβες.
Πρόσβαση
Η πρόσβαση γίνεται οδικώς απο εναν καλό δρόμο, τον οποίο θα συναντήσετε στρίβοντας απο την Έθνικη προς το χωριό Καλύβες.
Η παραλία
Η παραλία προς τα ανατολικά είναι κατά κύριο λόγο αμμώδης και πολύ φιλική σε παιδιά και οικογένειες, καθώς τα νερά είναι δροσερά και καθαρά και το βάθος ιδανικό για όλες τις ηλικίες. Σε κάποιο σημείο μάλιστα θα βρείτε και ένα μικρό λιμανάκι όπου κυρίως πηγαίνουν οικογένειες με μικρά παιδιά, αφού τα νερά εκεί είναι ζεστά και προστατευμένα.
Το μήκος της παραλίας είναι μεγάλο, ενώ το πλάτος της όχι. Υπάρχει ποικιλία παραστάσεων κατά μήκος της ακτής, με κάποια σημεία να είναι οργανωμένα και με πλήρεις υποδομές (ντουζ, καφετέριες, ξαπλώστρες, ταβέρνες κλπ) και κάποια, προς τα ανατολικά, να ειναι πιο ήσυχα. Δυτικά η παραλία και ο βυθός είναι λίγο πιο βραχώδεις.
Η παραλία της Αλμυρίδας είναι μια πολύ καλή επιλογή για ένα ήρεμο μπάνιο κοντά στα Χανιά με την οικογένεια ή την παρέα σας, όπου μπορείτε είτε να βρεθείτε ανάμεσα σε κόσμο και οργανωμένες πλαζ, είτε να απολαύσετε πιο ήσυχα τη θάλασσα και τον ήλιο, απολαμβάνοντας ωστόσο και στις δύο περιπτώσεις την όμορφη θέα και τα καθαρά νερά.
1. ΣΥΝΤΟΜΟ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΟ
Πρωτολειτούργησε το 1864, όταν η περιοχή ήταν υπό την κατοχή της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Εντάχθηκε στο Ελληνικό Φαρικό Δίκτυο το 1913. Κατά τη διάρκεια του 2ου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου οι εισβολείς αφαίρεσαν τα φωτιστικά μηχανήματα και παρέμεινε σβηστός μέχρι το 1945, όπου στα πλαίσια ανασυγκρότησης του Φαρικού Δικτύου, επαναλειτούργησε με νέα φωτιστικά μηχανήματα πετρελαίου. Το 1979 ο φάρος ηλεκτροδοτήθηκε, αντικαταστάθηκαν τα μηχανήματα πετρελαίου και λειτούργησε ως αυτόματος ηλεκτρικός, με χαρακτηριστικό τρεις λευκές αναλαμπές ανά 30 δλ. και φωτοβολία 20 ν.μ.
2.ΣΥΝΟΠΤΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ ΚΤΙΡΙΟΥ
Ισόγειος οικία , αποτελούμενη από ένα χολ, ένα διάδρομο, τρία δωμάτια, μίας κουζίνας, ενός W.C. μετά ντους και μίας αποθήκης. O πύργος είναι οκτάγωνος, ύψους 7 μ. και βρίσκεται στον κόλπο της Σούδας, αριστερά των εισερχομένων, 350 μ. από την ακτή και σε εστιακό ύψος 60μ.
Plaka is a lovely village in Apokoronas region, built on the slope of a hill overlooking Souda Bay. It has all the amenities you need, including excellent tavernas, bars, a grocery store and a kafeneon, all of which remain open throughout the year.
Plaka is only a few minutes drive from the sandy beach at Almerida, and five minutes further along the coast is Kalives, where day-to-day shopping, general amenities and more sandy beaches are available. The historic City of Chania is forty-five minutes drive, as is the airport.
Plaka was once a sleepy village with only approx. 250 inhabitants – it has grown over the last few years as people have discovered its charms and moved into the area. There are many marked walks and pathways in the area, with local transport and taxis available in Almerida.
The village retains its traditional identity, which must be protected through checks on new buildings in order to prevent the alteration of the traditional architectural style. Every summer Cretan music festivals take place in Plaka, the "Plakiana", in honour of Michael Papadakis, from Plaka, a fine lyra player of recent years.
Kambia, on the Apokoronou Peninsula, is a small traditional Vilage near the village of Plaka. As you leave Plaka and follow signs for Kokkino Chorio, you will start to climb up a hill. After about a kilometre, on the bend, turn right in to the tiny hamlet of Kambia. Kambia has about 50 permanent residents.
As always, there is a nice church in the middle of the old houses that form the original village. The older generation of villagers live here along with a few foreign neighbours in adjacent renovated houses.
It is within easy driving distance (4 km) of the coastal resort of Almerida, with its lovely sandy beach, and the busy town of Kalives, which offers shopping and amenities for day-to-day living.
The quaint hamlet of Kambia has magnificent uninterrupted views of Souda Bay, olive and pine covered hills and valleys, and the White Mountains which are snow capped for 6 months of the year. With peaceful fields and olive groves, Kambia - Apokoronas area comprises some of the most attractive villages on Crete such as Kokkino Chorio, Plaka, Drapanos, Xirosterni, Gavalohori, Vamos and Kefalas, all of which are old traditional villages with stone houses and beautifully blended new developments.
Set high on the Drapanos Apokoronas peninsula hill, this village often has panoramic views of either Souda Bay and the coastal villages of Almyrida and Kalives to the north and west, or the green valley and the White Mountains to the south. There is a taverna, mini market, and 2 cafes in the village itself, and only an 8 minute drive to Ombrogialos Cove and Almyrida or 13 minutes to Kalives and the National Highway.
Slowly expanding, its still quite a traditional village with an area on the outskirts which is essentially ‘new build’. There are about 110 permanent residents.
It’s also difficult to believe that Drapanos is at the forefront of a project supported by WWF (world wildlife fund) Greece. A lady called Sharon Jackson is currently heading a project for ESA (the European Sustainability Academy) to build a ‘fully sustainable’ residential conference, international management and research centre .
The building will be constructed in a very old and traditional manner – possibly using elements of mud and straw. It is planned to be open in September 2010. The plot is on the outskirts of the village and the intention is that the building is also used by the villagers to provide them with another amenity.
Kokkino Chorio is a small, traditional Greek village on the coast of the Apokoronou Peninsula. From here the views across Souda Bay to the Akrotiri Peninsula are magnificent, and to the south the White Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop, making the village a highly desirable location both for permanent residence and for holidays.
It is only a few minutes drive from Plaka with its tavernas and bars, and the lovely sandy beach at Almerida. A few minutes further brings you to Kalives where there are more sandy beaches, good shopping for day-to-day needs and a variety of other amenities.
The village is famous for taking part in the filming of Zorba the Greek – Antony Quinn is still talked about in the local kafenions!

Another cave called Katalimata, located at the centre of the village, is also an interesting site.

Αλμυρίδα: Ένα μικρό παραθαλάσσιο τουριστικό θέρετρο. Εδώ μπορείτε να δείτε τα ερείπια της Βασιλικής του 11ου αιώνα, με τα μωσαϊκά. Οι δύο μικρές χρυσές αμμουδιές είναι ιδανικές για κολύμπι. Γύρω από τον κόλπο υπάρχουν άφθονες οικογενειακές ταβέρνες με φρέσκια ψάρια και θαλασσινά.
