Ano Viannos, the place which hosts the tomb of the giant Otos of the greek mythology of the giant, is a picturesque village, the most populous of the municipality. It’s located about 65 km far from Heraklion at an altitude of 560m. It has 878 inhabitants and as it is the seat of the municipality, almost all the main public services are held there.
Ano Viannos has got a lot of fountains as Gamprigiele which supplies with water the stream of Karydioti, of Chalastia, of Sklavos etc. Admittedly the most beautiful landscape is the stream of Gamprigiele at the eastern slope, where Dervisis’ cliff dominate.
The current Ano Viannos is built on the ruins of the once ancient town of Viannians of the Roman era, which flourished until the 9th century AD, when it was devastated by the powerful neighbouring town Ierapytna, today
Ierapetra
. During its peak the city was independent and autonomous and even cut its own coins, on which there was a woman (Artemis or Viannis) on one side and a flower and the word VIANNI to the other side.
Very interesting Early Minoan seal were found recently in the same town. In the area called "Galana Charakia" two tombs were investigated and found twenty funeral vessels of the late Minoan period, and a lot of other stone and clay vessels, seals, etc.
