The ancient name of this village is Trouloti, and thus is rendered in Venetian documentation and censuses. In Ottoman register of 1671 it is not quoted, but it appears again in 1834 (census of Pashley) with its current name. In census of1881 is also recorded as Tourloti belonging to then municipality of Partira.
The name of village emanated from its panoramic position, at the top of the last hill range that begins from Tefeli, kefalochori of Asterousia municipality. In the wider region of the village many archaeological artifacts have been found from cultivators, while the impetuous flow of water and rainfalls have unearthed ancient graves which get covered again under mud or are taken away by the powerful flow of the river.

Σε υψόμετρο 300μ., 30χλμ. νότια της πόλη του Ηρακλείου και 1χλμ. νότια του χωριού Αμουργέλλες, βρίσκεται το ομώνυμο φράγμα, ένα από τα μεγάλα της περιοχής του Αρκαλοχωρίου, έκτασης 150 στρεμμάτων. Συγκεντρώνει τα νερά του χειμάρρου Αμουργελλών, καθώς και τριών ρεμάτων εποχιακής ροής, με αποτέλεσμα το χειμώνα να υπερχειλίζει, ενώ η στάθμη του νερού να πέφτει το καλοκαίρι.
Η υλοποίηση του τεχνικού αυτού έργου, πραγματοποιήθηκε από το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας του Π. Κ (Μ.Φ.Ι.Κ.) με τη συνεργασία του Μεσογειακού Αγρονομικού Ινστιτούτου Χανίων (Μ.Α.Ι.Χ.) και των Δήμων Ιεράπετρας, Θραψανού, Ρούβα και Αρκαλοχωρίου, στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος LIFE 00 ENV/GR/000685 «Μεσογειακοί Υγρότοποι και Ταμιευτήρες», την περίοδο 2001-2005
Σήμερα, το φράγμα έχει συμβάλλει στην ανάδειξη του φυσικού κάλλους της περιοχής, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί σημαντικό υδροβιότοπο και πόλο έλξης οικοτουριστών. Αν και έχει κατασκευαστεί πρόσφατα, παρουσιάζει πλούσια πανίδα, καθώς έχει προσελκύει αρκετά είδη μεταναστευτικών αλλά και διαχειμάζοντων πτηνών, όπως επίσης και πολλά υδρόβια είδη. Ακόμα, στον ευρύτερο χώρο του, έχουν διαμορφωθεί υποδομές ήπιας αναψυχής με σηματοδοτημένες περιβαλλοντικές διαδρομές για όσους θέλουν να εξερευνήσουν τον υγρότοπο και θέσεις με θέα για ανάπαυση. Γύρω από τη λίμνη, οι τοποθετημένες ενημερωτικές πινακίδες, προωθούν την ευαισθητοποίηση των περιηγητών και την υπεύθυνη περιβαλλοντική συμπεριφορά.
The name of the village Ligortinos (Ligordine) was first recorded in old manuscripts in 1271. It was also in a census by Barozzi in 1583.
Late Minoan archaeological finds of Ligortinos are in the museum of Louvre.
Moreover, in Monumenti Veneti (Venetian Monuments) Gerola refers to an old fountain constructed by an ingenious technician dated back to the Roman Times.
The name of the village is Pre-hellenic. The Cultural Association Club of the village helps keep its tradition, from the narrow stone alleys to the monuments like the old Aquaduct. There are also remains of old churches like the Holy Trinity. The patron saint of the village is Saint Haralambos and on his name day on February 10, a religious traditional fair is held. The community of Plakiotisa pertains to Ligortinos with a magnificent dam.
The village of Pirathi is in the County of Asteroussia, 3.5 klm. east of Tefeli. It is situated approximately where the old town of Pirathos was discovered and therefore named after it.
The village was first recorded in census by Barozzi in 1577.
