The traditional Cretan village of Kaliviani Kissamos is situated in a quiet rural area of North West Crete 6km from the busier seaside and agricultural town of Kastelli or Kissamos and 3km from the main Kissamos seaport which has regular ferry connections to mainland Greece (Peloponisos: Gythio - Kalamata - Monemvasia) and also seasonal daily boat excursions to Balos and Gramvousa.
The beauty of the village can be attributed to its wonderful stone houses and to the many flowers that blossom in every yard. Its people are friendly and hospitable. The tradition is alive in Kaliviani, since even today the houses are built the traditional way, with stones, by skillful technicians. The village was the birthplace for the important Cretan revolutioner, Emmanuel Diktakis, who in 1840 organized the revolution against the Turks in Apokoronas.
The village of Kaliviani has two restaurants and two cafenions and is ideally situated to explore the beautiful countryside, fantastic beaches and historical sites of
Western Crete either by car or as a walker. It is the last village on the base of the Gramvousa peninsular and here starts the route to the fanatastic lagoon of Balos. They are a 15 minute stroll (1km) to the sea and 10km from the fabulous beach of Falassarna.
The nearby working town of Kastelli Kissamos has many facilities without being too touristy. It boasts a small fishing harbour, larger seaport served by ferries, tavernas, bars and cafes, shops, banks, post office, car and bike hire, beaches, a promenade by the sea, museum and a bus station with services to local villages and the beautiful Venetian harbour town of
Hania 37km away.
