The village of Agouseliana lies 24 km south of Rethymnon and on a 350 m altitude between the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and Kotsifou gorge. It is built in a small valley which merges with the plain of Koxare. In the north, there is the hill of Kefala and in the south we see Atsipadiana.
Agkouseliana was named after a villager who came during the Turkish occupation from the village of Kouse of Messara (Kouselianos - Agkouselianos - Agkouseliana).
The earth is loamy and sandy and in many places we can see coals and turf. Residents are mainly occupied with farming and stockbreeding and produce olive oil and horticultural and stockbreeding products. Also, two big modern units producing dairy and olive products, operate in the area. Agkouseliana together with Palaioloutra have 330 residents, according to the 2003 census.
The village has been inhabited for a long time, since there is much proof of life in this area dating back to many centuries in the past. The area around this village is full of horn chips, which belong to horn-roofed tombs, and vessels of the Hellenistic and Roman eras.

Το κάστρο αποτελείται από μία μεγάλη εσωτερική αυλή, η οποία περιβάλλεται σε όλο το μήκος της δυτικής πλευράς από δύο συνεχόμενους χώρους οι οποίοι ενώνονται με καμάρες. Η στέγαση των χώρων αυτών γίνεται με ψηλούς θόλους.
Στην ανατολική υπάρχει κτίσμα που στεγάζεται και αυτό με θόλο χαμηλότερο από τους προηγούμενους σε όλο το μήκος της πλευράς αυτής. Η πρόσβαση γίνεται με ράμπα από την νότια πλευρά στην οποία το περιτείχισμα διακόπτεται από ένα κλειστό τμήμα για την είσοδο. Ο κουλές είναι κατασκευασμένος από τοπική υπόλευκη πέτρα με σκληρό συνδετικό κονίαμα. Εξωτερικά και εσωτερικά είναι επιχρισμένο και το πάχος της λιθοδομής είναι 1,20 μ. Έχουν καταρρεύσει το δυτικό και ανατολικό κτίσμα. Υπάρχει δεξαμενή συλλογής βρόχινου νερού της οποίας σώζεται το εσωτερικό υδραυλικό κονίαμα.
The village of Koxare is 23 km far from Rethymnon and 9 fom Plakias coastal village. It has 401 residents according to the 2001 census. The village lies in one of the most fertile regions of the hinterland. The lush green landscape of the Koxare plain (of olive trees) alternates with the wild and imposing landscape among the Atsipadiana Mountains or the mountains of Kouroupa, on the foot of which the village is built.
The olive plantation of Koxare is the biggest one in the former county of Agios Vasileios. Residents are occupied almost exclusively with farming and stockbreeding.
At Koxare, there is the cave of Beligkre on a 470 m altitude and the cave of Honos on a 1100 m altitude. After the village of Koxare, Kourtaliotiko Gorge begins (which is included in the NATURA 2000 network). It is 2100 m long and Kourtaliotis River flows along it, with dense vegetation (many palm trees) and steep high masses of rock on both sides.
The village played a vital role in the fights of Cretan people, due to its position at the entrance of Kourtaliotiko Gorge. In the southeast, a peak sanctuary of the middle Minoan era has been found, as well as statuettes picturing humans or animals, while tombs of the late Minoan era have been excavated. The little church of Ai Giorgis with its Byzantine wall paintings is very interesting.
