Μέρη κοντινά με Άγιος Ονήσιμος
It is one of the biggest monasteries on Crete. Situated at a distance of 32 kilometres from the city of Heraklion and 2 km far from Metaxochori village, the monastery is dedicated to ‘Agios Georgios’ and is celebrated on 23rd of April and on 3rd of November.
The religious festivals that take place on these dates constitute important events during which one can watch stock-raisers come to the monastery holding lambs and cheese which they leave at the church as offerings to the Saint.
At the small museum of the monastery important relics and icons are kept. Make sure you see the illustrated manuscripts with excellent miniatures of the 17th and 19th century found there but also, in the shop of the museum, the books that were written by the late calligrapher monk named Gabriel Mamougiorgis. The point is not to forget to visit the museum…
The monastery was probably founded during the 16th and 17th century but it developed during the period of the Turkish occupation (1669 – 1898). It acquired vast property and played the role of a centre of resistance against the Turks. The great number of monks who live there nowadays is an excellent example of how the island’s monastic tradition is preserved.

The settlement is Armanogia in the municipal district of Metaxohori located at an altitude of 380 meters and distance from Heraklion 38 km southwest a short distance from the monastery of Epanosifi.

This settlement like many others in the central and southern prefecture of Heraklion claim the credit for its rich music tradition. Many singers, lyre-players and Cretan rhyme-makers (mantinades/mantinadologoi) masters of the Cretan dialect, have their origin in that region.
The plain in the region provides fertile soil, which is cultivated by the people and produces wine grapes and olive oil without coming behind on livestock products. A large and important project for - and not only - Armanogeia is the construction of the dam that was completed recently.
The amount of water is enough to gather the crops and to maintain the newly established flora and fauna. Hundreds of local and migratory birds rush here all day and along with the dominant inhabitant, the turtle, give a special beauty to the landscape.www.endoxora-irakleiou.gr

Amourgeles is located at a distance of 38 km from Heraklion and is built on the road axis Alagni-Panorama-Stironas-Amourgeles, in the east side of Amigdalokefalo hill.
We meet for the first time the name of the village as Amurgielle in a document of the Venetian archives. Since then it is recorded in all the consequent censuses.
In the period of Ottoman occupation, the village had exclusively Muslim residents and seems to have been one of those villages whose inhabitants were forced to become Muslims in order to keep their properties.
With the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece that took place in 1922, and the abandonment of the village by its Turkish population, many refugees from Asia Minor were installed here, bringing their own cultural habits and way of life with them. They cultivated vines making the production of raisins and grapes the main product of the village.
Today Amourgeles produces also olive oil, livestock, and horticulture in the irrigated gardens and fields of the village from the natural springs that are scattered all around the countryside.
A river tributary, Nispitas, one of the main streams of Anapodiaris River, accumulates most of its water from here and from the surrounding countryside.

Τα Λιβάδια είναι ένα ερειπωμένο χωριό στο Μονοφάτσι. Σήμερα διατηρούνται μονάχα λείψανα κτισμάτων στο μέρος που ήταν τα Λιβάδια. Τα μεν σπίτια των κατοίκων του, έχουν καταστραφεί εντελώς. Κατερειπωμένος, αλλά σε καλύτερη κατάσταση από τα υπόλοιπα κτίσματα, διατηρείται στο υψηλότερο σημείο του οικισμού, ο πύργος των Λαγγουβάρδων. Ο πύργος βρισκόταν στη μέση του χωριού και γύρω-γύρω τα σπιτάκια των κατοίκων του, που ήταν όλοι φαμέγιοι του Λαγγουβάρδου και δούλευαν στα χωράφια και τα βοσκοτόπια του. Η χρήση του χώρου του, μέχρι και σήμερα για τον σταυλισμό των ζώων επέτειναν την καταστροφή του.
