Το καταφύγιο του Λιμνάκαρου βρίσκεται στον ορεινό όγκο της Δίκτης στη θέση Στροβίλι, στην πλαγιά νοτιοδυτικά του ομώνυμου οροπεδίου και σε υψόμετρο 1350 μέτρων. Μπορεί να φιλοξενήσει 20 άτομα σε κρεβάτια-κουκέτες και 10 περίπου ακόμη άτομα μπορούν (με τον ανάλογο εξοπλισμό) να κοιμηθούν στο πάτωμα. Διαθέτει ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα από γεννήτρια, νερό για καθαριότητα, εξοπλισμένη κουζίνα, τουαλέτα και ξυλόσομπα για θέρμανση. Την διαχείριση/διάθεση του καταφυγίου έχει ο Ε.Ο.Σ. Λασιθίου.

Dikti or Dicte or Lassithiotika Ori, is a mountain range on the east of the island of Crete in the prefecture of Lassithi. On the west it extends to the prefecture of Heraklio. According to the Greek Mythology, Zeus was reared on this mountain in a cave called Dikteon Andron (Psychro Cave). On the north of the main massif, the plateau of Lassithi is located.
The topology of the mountain range is rich with a lot of plateaus (Lassithi, Katharo, Omalos Viannou, Limnakaro), valleys and secondary peaks. Some important peaks are Spathi 2148m, Afentis Christos/Psari Madara 2141m, Lazaros 2085m, Katharo Tsivi 1665m, Afentis 1571m, Selena 1559m, Platia Korfi 1489m.
The main masif forms a horse-shoe around the valley of Selakano. Large part of the mountain area, including the Selakano valley, are forested with pines (pinus brutia), kermes oaks (quercus coccifera), cypresses (cupressus sempervirens), holm oaks (quercus ilex) and Cretan maples (acer sempervirens). The fertile valleys and plateaus of Dikti/Dicte are of significant importance in the local economy.Dominant feature of Dikti is the Lasithi Plateau, the largest and prettiest plateau in Crete. It is a place with a long history. Diktaion Antron, is located here, a cave where -according to the Mythology- Zeus was born. In a different myth, Dias (Zeus) was born in Idaion Antron in Mt Idi. A third myth is a compromize of the two, claiming that Zeus was born in Dikteon Andron but raised in Idaion.
The Lasithi Plateau is a nice place for pleasant excursions. If you are more ambitious and want to climb to the summit of Mt Spathi, then ask at the village of Agios Georgios for the path leading to the small plateau of Limnakaro. The distance is 2 hrs long.
At Limnakaro there is a dirty track leading to the shelter of the Mountaineering Club of Lassithi (30 minutes). Do not follow this road; try to locate the E4 path which leads to the top. The ground is not very solid, and special care is necessary. Go all the way up to the crest of the mountain and then keep moving to the left for the next 2 hours.
Limnakaro lies at about 1250 m above sea level, at the feet of the Spathi summit that rises at 2148 m. Because of its altitude, the plateau is mainly used as grazing grounds for sheep and goats. It has a rich wild flora and grows a number of walnut, pear, apple and chestnut trees. Despite a very small number of houses, there are no permanent residents at the plateau.
At its western part there is a double nave church dedicated to the Holy Spirit (Agio Pnevma) that dates back to the second Byzantine period (i.e., 961-1204). The church was expanded in 1875 and has been recently restored. Limnakaro is on the European walking route E4; at a height of 1350 m to its southwest in the Anestasi area there is a mountain shelter.

30 Ιανουαρίου 1969. Δυο Βομβαρδιστικά αεροσκάφη F-84F Thundestreak της 340 Μοίρας Διώξεως / Βομβαρδισμού απογειώνονται από την 115 Πτέρυγα Μάχης των Χανίων, για την εκτέλεση εκπαιδευτικής αποστολής.
Πετούν πάνω από το οροπέδιο Λασιθίου, μέσα σε έντονες καιρικές συνθήκες και ομίχλη... Η ρεαλιστική εκπαίδευση των Ελλήνων ιπταμένων και η άσκηση προσβολής στόχων εδάφους καταλήγει σε τραγωδία καθώς τα δύο αεροπλάνα συντρίβονται στο όρος Δίκτη, μέσα σε μια απόκρημνη χαράδρα στη θέση Βουρλίδια Οροπεδίου Λασιθίου, δυτικά από το χωριό Καμινάκι.
Οι δύο χειριστές, ο υποσμηναγός Κωνσταντίνος Νικολακόπουλος και ο ανθυποσμηναγός Αντώνιος Πιπεράκης βρίσκουν ακαριαίο θάνατο...
Τα αεροσκάφη διαλύονται, ενώ κλιμάκιο της αεροπορίας που έφτασε στο σημείο αργότερα, περισυλλέγει τους σωρούς των δύο ιπταμένων. Ο Νικολακόπουλος, με καταγωγή από την Πάτρα, και ο Πιπεράκης, με καταγωγή τα Ακούμια Ρεθύμνου, πέρασαν στο πάνθεον των ηρώων της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας που έχασαν τη ζωή τους εν ώρα καθήκοντος...
