Το χωριό Καλοί Λάκκοι ήταν καλοκαιρινό χωριό κατοίκων της Χώρας Σφακίων.

Παλιό, ιστορικό χωριό της επαρχίας Σφακίων. Αυτόε ίναι ενα απο τα ορεινότερα χωριά της επαρχίας και οι κάτοικοί του παραχείµαζαν στηΧώρα Σφακίων και γι’αυτό ήταν πάντα τµήµα της κοινότητος και της ενορίας της Χώρας. Η απόσταση από το δρόµο, µέσω Ανώπολης, είναι σχεδόν 25 χιλιόµετρα και η κατάσταση του δρόµου µετά την Ανώπολη είναι δύσκολος χωµατόδροµος. Το υψηλότερο µέρος του εγκαταλειµµένου χωριού είναι σε ένα υψόµετρο περίπου 1.000 µέτρα. Σε αυτή την περιοχή υπάρχουν τέσσερις ναοί, δυο παλαιοί, ένας που ανεγέρθηκε πρόσφατα στην περιοχή του χωριού και ένας τέταρτος, κάτω από το χωριό, µέσα στο φαράγγι του Καβή που είναι στα δυτικά του χωριού.

Δίκλιτος ναός του Χριστού και της Παναγίας τον οποίο συναντούµε στο µέσον του ερειπωµένου χωριού, περίπου ένα χιλιόµετρο πριν από το τέλος του χωµατένιου δρόµου.

No many dirt roads have been left in Sfakia so this is your chance if you have a 4x4 to get to two beautiful plateaus, the Tavri and Niatos.The road starts from Ammoudari village (there is a label) in Askifou Plateau, but be careful not to get confused because in the village the road forks. You have to turn left immediately after passing the building of OTE. For the next 2.8 km you drive on asphalt and then you get on a dirt road with a planted stone.
As you go up, you have a panoramic view of the Askifou plateau. In front of you, among the mountains, the sea pops up. You will reach Tavri after 7 kms and after 600 more meters you will see the path that goes left to the mountain retreat.
Do not stop here but continue for about 1 km further until you reach the beautiful Niatos plateau from whence many paths lead you to Kaloi Lakkoi, to Katsiveli and to Omalos in a demanding hike of 16 hours! In Niatos the dirt road makes a circle and you can move around to admire it from any aspect
Dozens of sheep usually graze here. In spring you will see flowers in all shades and colours appearing even among the stones. Above the plateau, the snowy peaks of the Lefka Ori mountains rise and there is an almost eerie silence across the region .
It is located at an altitude of 750 m, and it is 50 km from the city of Hania and 20 km from the village of Vrises. Its population is approximately 500 people. The small villages that constitute the community of Askifou are Kares, Ammoudari, Goni and Petres. The most touristically organised of them is Ammoudari with restaurants, gas station, and some rooms for rent.
The name Askifou is probably derived from the ancient word "Skifos", meaning cup, because the plateau looks like a big cup. Most of the times in winter the plateau is covered with snow. In a house in Ammoudari there is the only fir-tree in Crete The main occupation of the inhabitants is sheep and goat raising and there are many cheese dairies where the visitor can buy some excellent cheese like athotiros and myzithra. During November, in many houses they produce the famous raki, the alcoholic liquor from grapes.
The plateau receives many visitors, especially the last years, mainly passengers on their way to and from Hora Sfakion , or hikers climbing in the nearby mountains. In the plateau there is a Post Office with exchange.There are some rooms for rent and some taverns where the visitor can enjoy the famous Sfakian specialities like the Sfakian pies (cheese pies with honey) and the delicious "siglina" (pork meat smoked with aromatic herbs). A big public feast is taking place every year on the celebration of the Pentecost (first week of June) , in the chapel built on the plateau of Tauris, at an altitude of 1000 m. After the divine service, in accordance with the Sfakian customs, delicious food and excellent wine are offered to all visitors.The plateau of Askifou is considered the Thermopiles of Sfakia, because the only way to the Hora Sfakion and the surrounding coastal area is through this plateau. In Askifou, in the 21st of August 1866, met the General Congress that declared the union of Crete with the rest of Greece, and abolished the Turkish authority to Crete.From Askifou the visitor can enjoy a walk to the White Mountains. The distance from Ammoudari to the plateau of Tauris where a shelter is placed, is 7 km, and the walk through the path takes about 1,5 hours. Continuing for another 1 km. is the plateau of Niatos (altitude 1200 m) above which are the imposing mountain peaks of the White Mountains, Kastro (2218 m) and on the right Fanari (2190 m), which can be reached with a four hours climbing.

Η είσοδος του φαραγγιού βρίσκεται στο χωριό Ίμβρος (780 μ. Υψόμετρο) και η έξοδος στο χωριό Κομιτάδες, κοντά στη Χώρα Σφακίων. Το μήκος του φαραγγιού είναι 7 χμ και η πεζοπορία είναι βατή και εύκολη, κατάλληλη ακόμα και για παιδιά. Το στενότερο σημείο του φαραγγιού είναι μόλις 2 μέτρα! Είναι ένα απο τα λίγα φαράγγια τα οποία είναι προσβάσιμα ακόμα και τον χειμώνα (εκτός εάν βρέχει πολύ).
Παλαιός ναός του 15ου αιώνα, που βρίσκεται µέσα στο Σφακιανό φαράγγι σε υψόµετρο περίπου 800 µέτρων, ενάµισι χιλιόµετρο νότια από το παλιό χωριό Καλοί Λάκκοι, δυτικά από το χωριό Ίµπρος, κοντά σε ένα εγκαταλειµµένο οικισµό που ονοµαζόταν ∆ιχαλώµατα (το Σφακιανό φαράγγι χωρίζεται σε δυο παρακλάδια σε αυτή την τοποθεσία). Ο επισκέπτης µπορεί να επισκεφτεί το ναό είτε ανεβαίνοντας το Σφακιανό φαράγγι είτε πηγαίνοντας από την Ίµπρο.
Ο ναός αναφέρεται στη συµφωνία του 1435 µεταξύ των οικογενειών Σκορδίληδων και των Βαλεριανών. Το ίδιο έγγραφο µας λέει ότι ο ναός ανεγέρθηκε από τους αδελφούς Βαλεριανούς. Ο ναός ανακαινίστηκε το 1965 από τονΑνδρέα Μπαµπιολάκη, της Σφακιανής οικογενείας από τη Χώρα, η οποία είχε καλοκαιρινή διαµονή στους ΚαλούςΛάκκους. Η οξυκόρυφη στέγη του ναού έχει επιδιορθωθεί µε µια πλάκα από σκυρόδεµα (µπετό) κατά τρόπο που έχει αλλοιώσει τελείως την παραδοσιακή όψη του ναού.

Ναός στην τοποθεσία Κατσούρα, ένας σχετικά νέος ναός που ανεγέρθηκε από τον Ανδρέα Μπραουδάκη το 1968.

Ναός του Τιµίου Σταυρού στο Μουρί, βρίσκεται µέσα στο φαράγγι, δυτικά του χωριού. Κάποιος µπορεί να πάει εκεί ή από το χωριό, από ένα µονοπάτι σε απόσταση περίπου ενός χιλιοµέτρου, ή από µια διακλάδωση στα δεξιά του δρόµου που ανεβαίνει στο χωριό, από µια διασταύρωση περίπου 8 χιλιόµετρα από τηνΑνώπολη. Ο ναός είναι στη δυτική πλευρά του φαραγγιού.
Ο ναός κτίστηκε πριν από το 1400 και σηµαντικά έργα για την προστασία του έγιναν το 1978. Έχει καλυφθεί από πάνω και από δύο πλευρές µε πλάκες απο σκυρόδεµα(µπετό) για την προστασία του από τα νερά του φαραγγιού κατά τρόπο που έχει αλλάξει τελείως η παλαιά όψη του. Οι παλαιές τοιχογραφίες έχουν υποστεί σοβαρή ζηµιά από τα νερά που έχουν µπει κατά καιρούς µέσα στον ναό. Ο ναός σήµερα είναι βυθισµένος σχε-δόν δυο µέτρα µέσα στην κοίτη του φαραγγιού. Πριν από 5 χρόνια είχε σχεδόν καλυφθεί από πέτρες και λάσπη από τα νερά του φαραγγιού και χρειάστηκε να τον ξεθάψουν.
Η παράδοση λέει ότι ο ναός κτίσθηκε από έναν Σφακιανό καραβοκύρη που είχε πάει για κυνήγι στα βουνά, έχασε το δρόµο του µέσα στο φαράγγι, και διψώντας έκανε τάµα στον Τίµιο Σταυρό ότι αν έβρισκε νερό θα έκτιζε ένα εκκλησάκι. Εκείνη τη στιγµή είδε ένα αγρίµι το οποίο το σκότωσε µε το τόξο του, αλλά είδε ότι το αγρίµι είχε το µούσι του βρεγµένο και σύντοµα βρήκε την πηγή µε το νερό εκεί κοντά. Ο κυνηγός σύντοµα έχτισε τον µικρό ναό µέσα στο φαράγγι και εκεί κοντά, πάνω από το φαράγγι, έχτισε και σπίτι για να ζήσει και έτσι κτίστηκε εκεί το χωριό Μουρί.

The Imbros Gorge was till late sixties the only way to reach the south coast of Sfakia. It was a natural shelter against invaders, like the Turks and later the Germans.
The gorge is as beautiful as the Samaria Gorge, only on a smaller scale. And it is by far more quiet, not having the crowds from there. Many wild trees can be seen, as well as a Venetian reservoir in the middle and a natural archway at the end. The gorge becomes very narrow on two spots, with spectacular views.
At the Tavri plateau, above the Askyfou plateau at an altitude of 1200m, the Tavri shelter was built in 1992. You can follow the rural road from the village of Askyfou, which is 7.7 kilometers long, to reach here. It is worth the effort to walk the unique route along the footpath through the dense cypress forest which spreads out above the village towards the Tavri plateau. The journey on foot takes about 1½ - 2 hours.
