Kandanos or Kantanos (Greek: Κάνδανος or Κάντανος) is a town and municipality in the west of the island of Crete, Greece. It is part of the Selino province which covers the southwest of the island in Chania Prefecture. The town has 564 residents. Kandanos is a historical place of unique beauty. Its full vegetation is comprised of its only historically organized olive grove aged over 600 years. It used to be a bishop’s base and is rich in Byzantine picturesque churches of the 13 th – 14 th century. It’s well known for its historical betties with the Nazis in 1941 as well as for its gorge with the stone-built path, suitable for either hiking or cycling.A perfect destination for traditional food of top quality in its taverns and a pleasant stay in its hotels. It is located 52 kms (45 minutes) and just 15 kms (10 minutes) from Paleochora, a seaside town with the most beautiful beaches in the island of Crete.
The Anisaraki or Anysaraki Village is the largest district of the village of Kantanos. Located about 3 km from the center of Kantanos. Remarkable are the Byzantine churches, and the church of Agia Anna with a well known icon.
The icon is very rare and said that there are only two more of such historical value in the world.
