Mount Kouloukonas (Rethimno prefecture and Kouloukonas Municipality), the highest peak of the Talea Mountain Range, is towering opposite the village of Garazo.
This mountain is closely connected with Greek mythology, in which it is said that this place hosted Talos, the son of Kritos and grandfather to Radamanthy, a solar deity.
Talos was brought into existence by Hephaestus and Daedalos; he was made of either copper or feathers and had one single vein running from his neck down to his ankle. According to the myth Talos was the guardian of the laws and the island. He was caught by the Argonauts and died in the arms of Dioskuri, when Medea succeeded in draining this unique vein.
The Talea Mountain Range is of exceptional beauty. Like an unassailable wall it protects and embraces the hinterland of the island. Gargling waterfalls at its foot irrigate the fertile valleys cultivated by the farmers. Its hillsides are used for pasturage, while the peak with its Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) church is facing Mount Psiloritis.
