Modi is a beautiful small village located 15km west of Hania city at 80m a.s.l. near the village of Gerani, at the edge of the municipality of Platanias in the Chania Prefecture, West Crete. Ancient Cretan coins were found here depicting on one side the head of Zeus and on the other that of a bull with the inscription "Modaion" which means coin of the people of Moda or Modea.



That make some to believe that an ancient city stood here with the above name which was maintained until today as Modi.

At Modi large amounts of archeological artifacts that have been discovered, tell us a story that begins in the Geometrical era (600-100 B.C.). All the artifacts are now displayed in the national archeological museum of Hania . At Modi you will meet the typical example of quiet agricultural life, since most of the local population is basically occupied in the cropping of their famous oranges and olives.

Many other findings tombs, weapons etc were unearthed to confirm the claims of the archaeologists.
