Mavros Kolimpos
Mavros Kolimbos is a tiny village and a beach (village is a large word to decribe it) on the south east coast of the island of Crete between Makrigialos and Achlia Beach, a little east of the town of Ierapetra (18 kilometer).
Mavros Kolimbos beach is a nice beach with black pebbles and usually calm deep water and is located very close to the main road Ierapetra - Sitia. The seabed is rocky in some places, making it ideal for snorkelers. It is totally unorganised, but there are some tamarisk trees around offering natural shade.
This area in particular is sheltered more than other places from winds due to its particular setting. Mavros Kolimbos has one or two secluded coves which are a bit difficult to reach but well worth the effort if peace and seclusion is what you are looking for. Other beaches east of Mavros Kolimbos are Diaskari, Langada, Amoudi, Galini, Koutsouras; some of them are commercial beaches and some are deserted. Between the mountains you find dried up riverbeds, which are flowing down to the sea during the winter months.
