Omalos Plateau (of eastern Crete - not to be confused with the one of the same name in western Crete) is 9 kilometers far from Symi or Simi. The lovers of walking in mountain will be able to borrow the paths crossing throats, brooks and pine forests for a walking of 3-4 hours following your rhythm. Omalos of Viannos is another plateau on the Lassithi (Dikti) mountains. It is less known compared to other plateaus in Crete and there is a new asphalt road (built 2009) from Ano Simi for the first 6 km and a dirt road for the last 3 km. In Spring, the water from the melting snow creates a small, shallow lake in the plateau. See the view driving from Simi to Omalos Plateau!!
You can take a different (quite interesting, with breathtaking views) way down, heading towards Embaros (ask the old man who is often at the little church in the plateau for directions).
