Mr. Nikolaos Panayiotakis, who methodically studied the place-names of Crete claims that the name “Loumas” is Byzantine and he associates it with the verb ‘reo” to flow, the noun “nero” or water and the verb “loume” to bathe. On the sweeping plain of Louma are the settlements of Pano and Kato Seles, which place names relate to the morphology of the terrain and mean the nape of the hillside. The view towards the Cretan Gulf is magnificent from whichever side you look.
North of Aghios Nikolaos, two kilometres beyond Plaka, is the village of Brouhas, on the top of the mountain above the Bay of Elounda and the island of Spinalonga. It was built at a height of 200m, which can be reached by following a short route along the panoramic Bay of Mirabello. This village is even more charming because of the location of its windmills, currently under restoration, which stand like sentries at the entrance to the village.
