In the wider region of the village, archaeological artifacts from illegal excavations have been found from time to time, while newer monuments (mainly churches with frescoes dating back to the last years of the Byzantine Empire) are found both in the village and in the wider region.
Kassanoi took its name very probably from the family surname of a Jewish family, the existence of which appears in documents dating back to 1368 and 1389. These documents show that the members of this family were the first settlers of the village, as Mr. S. Spanakis suggests

Church of Christ the Savior in Kassanoi
The Temple of Christ the Savior is located northwest of the village Kassanoi and its foundation goes back to the second Byzantine period (around 1260). The church, which was formerly parish, is dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ and it seems to have been built on the ruins of an earlier building. The frescoes relate to three different periods, representing the evolutionary phases of painting in Crete (13th to 15th century). The niche of the sanctuary is raised and open.
Church of the Annunciation in Kassani
The cemetery church of the Annunciation is located approximately 500 meters southwest of the village, at the cemetery. This small temple has been built on the ruins of an earlier church, from which preserved sections are incorporated in the northern and southern walls of the existing church during its construction. The church is adorned with frescoes preserved in fragments.
