Aloides

The settlement is found at an altitude of 340m in Kouloukonas municipality, Rethimno Prefecture (between Rethimno and Heraklion City). It is first recorded in 1577 by Barozzi and later on by Kastrofilakas (1583) and Basilicata (1630).

The village is referred to, with the same name, and in the Turkish census of 1671. Psilakis connects the name with the mythical giants Aloades or Aloides that are identified with Sarantapichi of Modern Greek mythology.
According to the tradition Sarantapixi where enormous Greek giants that could only stand on their feet because once seated they could not get up. Due to their sins God through thunders at them, they fell on their feet and as they could not longer stand up, they died.

Drosia, of Chonos municipal district, is located at an altitude of 300m above sea level in the all green valley of Milopotamos Province, in Kouloukonas mountains, by Rethimno prefecture.

In the place of the current settlement, a Turk had opened a cafe for the service of the passers by. Thus the old name of Drosia was Geni Gkave (= new cafe).

In this beautiful village we can today enjoy tasty roasted piglet.
