Apokoronas Region in Chania

Apokoronas is a region of north-west Crete, in Chania prefecture, to the east of Chania itself. The Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete."Kiliaris" river, runs through the region all the year and some smaller rivers run only on the winter time. It is suggested that the name "Apokoronas" came from the ancient city of Ippokoronion. This city may have been located near to Nippos, or on the site of the Venetian fortress, Castel Apicorono, on an outcrop between Almirida and Kalives. The major towns of Apokoronas are Vamos, Kalives, Vrisses, Georgioupolis, Asi Gonia and Fres with police stations, municipal (till the end of 2010)and utility offices as well as taverns and "kafenion".Kalives, Almirida, Kavros and Georgioupolis are the largest beach resorts since the last 30 years.Tourism, agriculture and livestock-farming are the major local industries, with much construction and quarrying to satisfy the demands of many foreigners eager to buy or rent properties in what used to be beautiful and traditional villages. Gavalohori, Plaka, Almirida, Drapanos and Kokkino Horio are among the more popular villages for foreign (mostly English) buyers.

Apokoronas is a province of Greece with its capital at Vrises. The area was divided into several municipalities, within Chania prefecture, which hold most local authority. In the summer time a lot of conserts and local fiestas give a kind of diferent life in the area

The village is located in Apokoronas region, Chania Prefecture, West Crete. There are references of Neo Horio back to at least the 16th century. In the upper neighborhood of the village there is an interesting complex of a feudal residence first built during the early Venetian period and reconstructed during the Ottoman period. In the complex there is an olive oil-press, storage rooms and the residence, which was the property of the feudal Saridis family. It is also worth visiting the Koule, a fortress built over Venetian ruins during the Turkish occupation, located on the hill south from the village, as well as the small church of St. Gerasimos, carved inside a rock and dated back to the 17th century.Visitors in Neo Horio may rest in the big square where an old plane tree and a well of the Turkish period stand, and enjoy the products of the region.
