Sklavokampos

Sklavokampos (also Sklavokambos) is the archaeological site of an ancient Minoan settlement in Crete, used during the Late Minoan period. Sklavokampos is just southwest of Tylissos, 22km far from Iraklion.

The site was discovered while constructing a road to Anogia and was first excavated in the 1930s.A multiple-story building was found at the site. Its main room yielded a clay ox head, a LMIB style jug and a stone rhyton. The building had at least 17 rooms. Finds from an upper story included 39 sealings, a cylindrical vessel, a stone hammer and a clay foot. Seal impressions from one the Sklavokampos sealings have been found in Zakros, Gournia and Agia Triada. No frescoes or gypsum finishings were found at the Sklavokampos building, which are commonly found in Minoan palaces.

Spiliara Cave 2973 hits
Directions of approach: Behind the church of Agios Konstantinos, in Astiraki village by Tylisos municipality, Heraklion region, there is a path which goes through the fields and leads to a torrent. This torrent ends up in Spiliara which literally gulps it.

The entrance of the cave is 1,85m. high and 1,20 metres wide. The hall is big (15,50m.x30m. with a height of 7 metres), with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The one who enters the cave sees right away in the centre, two pillars of stalagmites which leave a little empty space between them so that a human being can hardly pass through as well as other large complexes of stalagmites.

The cave is inaccessible. In order someone to get inside needs a rope because in the mouth there is an abrupt downshift of 2 metres. It is a gradual chasm with a total tunnel length of 430 metres. There is a lake inside, from what French speleologists say who have explored Spiliara, and it takes special equipment for its exploration. It is the second cave in length in Malevizi Province.

In Spiliara cave the residents of Astiraki were hiding during the 2nd World War, when the Germans were bombing.

Hainospilios Cave 2893 hits
You can get to the Hainiospilios Cave (Chainospilios or Marmarospilios =>Marble Cave), Rethimno prefecture, via the route Iraklion - Anogia, over Tilissos - Astiraki - Gonies. Between Astiraki and Gonies villages (about in the middle of the distance) is right the branch towards Kamaraki (2km).

Cross the tiny mountain village over the narrow “main street” until the village end with a sharp right curve (where the street becomes wider and you can find a good parking possibility). Within this right curve turns left a gravel path off that leads up to the cave. This path is very difficult to navigate (no turning possibility) and you therefore should walk the way to the cave since its only 250 meters to there. Touristic the cave is barely developed which includes its exploration. Data about its extension, history and size are not known and the speleologistical investigations are certainly still not completed. Thanks to the few visits the cave is still pretty "unaffected" and impresses by its varied appearance of small halls with widely ramified corridors and wonderful "sinter curtains"; stalagmites and stalactites and fairytale-like limestone formations. A inspection is not very difficult, but should be carried out only with sufficient light sources, a good sense of direction and appropriate clothing. A "solo" is not recommended - the "Commission at your own risk" indicates a sign (in the cave). Because the cave is not "tidied up", therefore you should pay attention to the cave floor (trip points).

The cave entrance (closely and small) is blocked with a iron lattice but not locked! From the entrance the way leads on your right about 1.80 m steeply down to a small plateau where the different tunnels branch off (to the right as well as to the left). The cave corridors (with branching creep tunnels) are almost always maintain and expand in places too small halls with up to 3 m ceiling height. Here is "much to discover at stalactite formations" and compared to the developed tourist caves, this cave is a real experience!

The conches of the Minoan era which were found in the cave indicate its use as a worship ground during the ancient times. The name Chainospilios comes from Chainis Giannis Palmetis (1790 – 1834, real name Panteris) from Kamaraki settlement who was the most terrifying exterminator of the Turkish Agas and was using the cave as a hideout. (chain in turkish means rebel-unsubdued).

In a distance of 28 metres south east of the cave’s entrance, there is a second cave called Chamoto Spiliari with length of 32m., width of 6 m. maximum and height of 6 metres with a remarkable stone decoration.

Astiraki 2891 hits
Astyraki or Astiraki village is in a distance of 15 minutes west of Tylisos Village (13 km) and 24 km far from Heraklion City. It is built in a height of 550 meters, at the foot of Psiloritis Mountain with spectacular view and magnificent caves. The natural life of residents makes them the most long-living of the region. Here, the sacred tree was an Astirakas, a plant used from the ancient years for the production of incense. The ancients Cretans worshipped Apollo as a Stirakit, a tree divinity, the heir of the immemorial god of vegetation. As a matter of fact, there also was the Stirakion Mountain.Nowadays, most of the residents are occupied with agriculture, stock farming and apiculture. There are also considerable cultivations of garden products and of forestal areas. In the sights of the village are also contained: the church of Agios Konstantinos and the impressive Spiliara cave. In the village there are traditional rooms to let.
