Places near Xerokampias
This is the most famous gorge in the area, also known as the Canyon of the Dead, due to the Minoan cemetery. Apart from its impressive topography, rich flora and plentiful water, it is also home to several sites of archaeological and historical interest. The E4 path passes through the gorge, while at its exit there is an organized rock climbing area. The trail starts from Epano Zakros and ends at the archaeological site of Kato Zakros.
Zakros’ Natural History Museum
The Zakros’ Natural History Museum is located at the Polykentro building, lying along the main road that crosses Epanos Zakros village.
The Museum is dedicated to the natural environment of the Park. The flora, fauna, and geology of the area is presented through small dioramas (reconstructions of ecosystems), staffed animals, posters and displays of rocks and fossils. Visitors can find all printed material of the Park, can watch the Sitia Nature park video, can browse the parks’ website and visit the European and Global UNESCO’s geoparks.
The museum offers parking and toilets and is open during summer times. During winter visitors should contact park’s authorities or Sitia Municipality.
Midway along the trail leading from Katsounaki beach to Kato Zakros is another ancient quarry, in the midst of compacted Pleistocene aeolianite sandstone, which were easily excavated as they are soft rocks due to their many pores.
