Kera Village is located 23km south of Mallia city on the way to Lassithi plateau. This is spread in the middle of a valley with abundant waters and luxuriant vegetation. Verdant with fructiferous trees, it offers a breathtaking view. The village lies at the entrance of the Lassithi Plateau. Epano Kera Miniti and Kato Kera are situated at an altitude of 680 and 580metres, respectively. Their name comes from the homonymic monastery of Panagia Kera Kardiotissa (Holly Mother).
This was built between the two villages and is characterized as a Byzantine monument (961 – 1204 A.D.) Its establishment is related to the thaumaturge icon of Virgin Mary, which is kept in the church of Saint Alfonso Escuelino in Rome, nowadays. The work is attributed to Saint Lazarus dating from the 9th century. That historic monastery used to be the point of guard for the Lassithi Plateau, during Cretan combats. The visitor is impressed by the primeval ways of worship while listening to legends of local tradition and observing the wall paintings in the temple. One can relax with the inhabitants’ hospitality, the view and the environment over a glass of the famous raki, relish the palatable, traditional food served in the taverns of the village and buy the famous popular art handcrafts. Moreover, there are the local celebrations of Panagia Kardiotissa on 8th of September and of Agios Ioannis Rigologos on 29th of August, with traditional music and dances.

Following the road that crosses the gorge of Ampelos to the south, you will reach three springs (The springs of Agkathariano) with year round water flow.
There is a second gorge close to Ambelos gorge: The gorge of Roza. This gorge is a "branch" of the gorge of Ampelos. Its entrance is next to the provincial road that crosses the gorge of Ampelos. Its route is south-east and leads to Kera Monastery. It is also an ideal gorge for walking and hiking.

The mills are located in Lassithi Plateau, close to Tzermiado village by an altitude of 1000 m, and were built at the end of the 19th century and were used until World War II.During time the mills fell into decay. But two of them have however been restored, so you can see how the mills were organized.
Before you reach the pass, you pass by the new homo sapiens museum, showing examples of human habitations from the earliest times.Inside the actual pass you may simultaneously enjoy the magnificent view down over the village of Gonies and the north coast in the distance - and the equally fantastic view over the Lassithi plateau with the Dikti mountains in the background.
The Holy Monastery of Vidiani, which seems to have taken its name from the owners of the land it was built on, the family of Vides (or Vidides), is situated close to the Northwestern entrance of the Lassithi Plateau, built within a stone cavity of the mountain Louloudaki.
The construction of the monastery is said to have begun in 1841on the ruins of an old ruined church and it is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (the “Spring of Life”). It is a stone-built church with very elaborate masonry, stone carved apertures and a wood-carved altar-screen of impressive artistic merit.
The church and other main buildings of the Monastery were set to fire by the Ottomans in May 1867, during the revolt of Cretan people against the Ottoman domination. However, due to the high moral and the eagerness of the abbot and the monks it has been soon reconstructed. During the German occupation, the abbot of the monastery Dorotheos was executed because of his rebel action. In 1991 another monastery restoration and construction of new buildings began. Considerable works of restoration and renovation of the monastery are being done in the last few years, whereas in the area of the Monastery it is planned to establish the Museum of Natural History. Access from Agios Nikolaos or Heraklion is easy by rented or private car and motorbikes.
