The church of the Assumption in Kastamonitsa
This arched temple, which is dedicated to the Assumption, is situated at the entrance of the village Kastamonitsa inside the cemetery. Tradition has it that the temple is part of a monastery destroyed during the Ottoman period. The decoration of the frescoes inside date back to the 14th century but you can hardly distinguish them today because of the repeated coatings.
With the traditional, century old plane tree in the middle of the village square, surrounded by kafeneions (traditional cafes, reserved almost exclusively to men even today) serving refreshments; raki ( traditional spirit) and mezedes (tit-bits), Amariano is a typical Cretan village, well worth a look.
Until recently, the leather tannery was a main activity among the villagers. The main produce today are olive oil, raisins and grapes, although there is also livestock.
Close by is the church of Agios Giorgos Kefaliotis with good quality wall paintings. The cultural centre of Amariano organises a great feast on August 15th, the Dormition of Theotokos and on September 20th, day of the patron saint, Aghios Eustathios. This can be a great occasion for any visitor to live an authentic cultural experience, to meet the people and taste the traditional Cretan cuisine.
Church of Our Lady and Saint John in Mathia
This church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John, is located on the north side of the village of Mathia. It is a two-aisled arched church with influences from different architectural phases in each one of two aisles.
The oldest aisle, which is on the south, is dedicated to the Assumption and inside it is decorated by frescoes of the early 14th century that are not well preserved. The north aisle of the church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, bears murals and is a later addition of the 19th century. It seems to have been built on the ruins of an older temple, as it is demonstrated by the southern part of its walls.
Saint George in Mathia
Northeast of the village Mathia lies the church of St. George, a single – aisled arched church with arches and frescoes, for the construction of which local stone was used. The only entrance to the church is on the western wall between two pilasters made by carved limestone while the lintel is decorated with a cross inscribed in a circle. Among the many depictions of the murals, you can see the Prayer in the recess of the Sanctuary. Unfortunately, the frescoes of the temple have not survived in a good condition.
Church of the Metamorfosis of Jesus Christ in Mathia
On the south of ruins at a place called “Metohi”, in the area named “Ishmael Prinos”, there is the single – aisled arched church of the Metamorfosis of Christ, north of the village Mathia. An interesting piece of information is that the bell of the church is the upper part of a shell from the Second World War.
At the settlement of Mathia, at the place “Metohi”, the visitor will find the historic holly of Ismail Pasha, in an environment of great natural beauty, where ancient plane trees, running water and infrastructure for camping will reward any passer- by.
