Nithavris 3052 hits

The village Nithavris was named after the synecdoche of the words Nida+vreis (find), which means that you can find Nida from the village, the plateau of Psiloritis, where Idaion Cave is located in Nida plateau.

From the tombs found in the village, it is ascertained that it is inhabited since the 2nd or 3rd century. In Nithavri, a junction to the right goes through the villages Agios Ioannis, Ano Meros and ends up in Agia Foteini.

Nithavris mountain area: After Vistagi village (13km north from Nithavris) continue to the south (toward Nithavris) and prepare yourself for one of the most beautiful routes on asphalt in all of Crete, which takes you to the town of Agia Varvara through Nithavris - Kamares - Zaros on the road that connects Iraklio and Gortina.

Although it cannot exactly be described as a “mountain route,” it follows the west and south side of Mount Psiloritis and sometimes takes you to a pretty high altitude from where you can enjoy a great view wherever you look. If the night finds you travelling in this area, you have very few chances of finding “decent” accommodations. Apart from some shabby Rooms to Let in Platanos, Kamares and a few other villages, there is no place to rent.

Apodoulou 2957 hits

We continue straight ahead and at 55 km after Rethimno City we found village Apodoulou, with springs of water and plenty of greenery. It was named after the first inhabitants who were "apodouloi" which "slaves who were set free". It enjoyed its great prosperity during the Venetian Occupation.

A vaulted tomb of the mid-Minoan Period with four sarcophagus. Furthermore, a building with a golden axe and inscribed vessels of libations have been found. All these findings are exposed in the Museum of Rethymnon.

Here there is a wall-painted church of Saint Georgios, where an engraving is preserved since 1496 AD. After Apodoulou, a road on the left that follows a beautiful route to a green surrounding, leads to the villages of Platanos, Lohria which is the last village at the east part of Rethymnon, and Kamares.
