Vatalos is a relatively big and quiet sandy beach close to Fragokastelo beach and between Sfakia and Frangokastello, south west Crete.
It is located 1km east of Frangokastelo beach, 11km west from Chora Sfakion, Chania Prefecturein west Crete. The beach is no orginized.

The basilica of Aghios Nikitas is in the valley of Frangokastello of Sfakia, at a short distance from the coast of the Libyan Sea.
The basilica was built in the second half of the 6th century AD. It is an impressive 26 metres long, with a mosaic floor decorated with geometrical patterns and depictions of animals, mostly still preserved today. The floor is not in the customary style of Cretan mosaics.The basilica was abandoned when the Arab raids began. Many centuries later, during the Venetian period, materials from its ruins were used in the construction of the castle.In the 13th century, the present church was built on the ruins of the middle aisle of an early Christian basilica.
Frangokastello (the castle of the Franks: this Castle was built in 1371, during the four and a half centuries of Venetian rule) is a charming, peaceful and traditional village on the south coast of Crete, 12km east from Chora Sfakion and 20km west of Plakias, and offers splendid sandy beaches. The water is getting deepen very slowly, so this is the ideal spot for parents to let their children play in the sea. Even 50 meters outside in the sea the water is only knee deep.

This beach has beautiful white pinkish sand and has very shallow and clear waters and is ideal for families with children. Well organised, it offers accommodation facilities, food and drink and facilities for swimming and sunbathing (sun beds, umbrellas).
