Armacha or Armaha village lies at 490 m above sea level, at a distance of 7km from Kastelli, with 110 residents (census 2001) and is first referred to by Barozzi in 1577. Armaha is rich in the production of agricultural and livestock products.
The Metropolitan Bishop, Tirnovos Voulgaria Ilarionas Kabanaris Sinitis was born, and is also buried here. A man of advanced learning, he wanted to translate the Bible to Demotic Greek.
Church of Our Lady and Saint John in Mathia
This church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John, is located on the north side of the village of Mathia. It is a two-aisled arched church with influences from different architectural phases in each one of two aisles.
The oldest aisle, which is on the south, is dedicated to the Assumption and inside it is decorated by frescoes of the early 14th century that are not well preserved. The north aisle of the church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, bears murals and is a later addition of the 19th century. It seems to have been built on the ruins of an older temple, as it is demonstrated by the southern part of its walls.
Saint George in Mathia
Northeast of the village Mathia lies the church of St. George, a single – aisled arched church with arches and frescoes, for the construction of which local stone was used. The only entrance to the church is on the western wall between two pilasters made by carved limestone while the lintel is decorated with a cross inscribed in a circle. Among the many depictions of the murals, you can see the Prayer in the recess of the Sanctuary. Unfortunately, the frescoes of the temple have not survived in a good condition.
Church of the Metamorfosis of Jesus Christ in Mathia
On the south of ruins at a place called “Metohi”, in the area named “Ishmael Prinos”, there is the single – aisled arched church of the Metamorfosis of Christ, north of the village Mathia. An interesting piece of information is that the bell of the church is the upper part of a shell from the Second World War.
At the settlement of Mathia, at the place “Metohi”, the visitor will find the historic holly of Ismail Pasha, in an environment of great natural beauty, where ancient plane trees, running water and infrastructure for camping will reward any passer- by.
