Agia Lake 3001 hits

Artificial lake of Agia. Covering a surface of 450 acres, the lake is one of the most important wetlands of Greece.

The lake is on the southeast edge of the municipality of Platanias that borders the City of New Kydonia.  Reservoir that is a very rare wetland with a wide variety of flora and fauna. That is why the lake and the area which runs from the lake and following the flow of the river or Keritis or Platania that reaches the sea, is protected by the European Union.

The lake the same and the path along the riverbank is a wonderful experience, characteristic of the landscape of the region. It is the most suitable area for observation of aquatic birds in western Crete.

Particularly good for migratory birds but also provide breeding habitats within the reeds. The winter holds a considerable population of wild ducks and Falarides and is regarded as the most important wintering area of the endangered Valtopapias in Greece.

Early in the morning the view from the dam is blocked from the view of the sun so the footpath near the church is better for look. The trees and the bushy area around the lake also maintain a number of migratory birds. The list of registered bird species exceeds 200.

Not far from the lake but well hidden by orange and olive trees, one can find the early Christian Panagia tis Episkopis church. A sign on the way to Omalos will lead you there. Most likely it will not be open, but it is interesting to see the building as well as the archeological site next to it.

Agia
Agia 2936 hits

The village Agia refers to Kastrofilaka and there has been made mention of it from Basilakata in 1630. The etymology probably comes from the Arabic word water and is due to rich sources that gush in the region and form the confluent of Platania.

If the etymology is correct, then the village is built by the Arabs. The lake is located in the northeast end of the village of Agia, at its borders with the municipality of Nea Kydonia.

Although it is a man-made lake, it has been transformed into a living, unique biotope with a great variety of flora and fauna. For this reason, the lake and the territory that surrounds it, following the current of the river Keritis towards the sea, are protected by the "NATURA 2000" program of the European Union. The lake itself, as well as the route alongside the riverbank of Keritis, is a wonderful naturalistic experience and most characteristic of the area.
