Leaving behind Vrisses village and towards Georgioupolis and Rethymno, on our left side just before the junction for the highway we shall see the sign of archaeological interest.
The sign will lead us to the Greek “Kamara”, a bridge over the Vryssianos river, dating back to the Greco-Roman period (300 BC to 300 AD, roughly).
The bridge is one of the oldest in Crete and it was an important point on the north artery of Crete known later in the Venetian period as royal path (1645 - 1669 AD).
It is built with blocks and lime mortar is used as a binder. The blocks are exclusively from the area west of the bridge where a quarry was opened for this purpose. Even today we can see the old steps leading to it. Noteworthy is the fact that originally the arch was entirely built with boulders without connecting mud.
The highest point of the arch is 8,40m from the river bed and it has a maximum opening of 11,10m. Impressive is the thickness of 4,8m.!
Nowadays we can easily observe the bridge from all sides as the water of the river is so little and allow us to go down to the riverbed and observe from there. We can also cross the bridge and just feel a little of those old times when merchants with caravans and rigged armies used to pass daily from there!
