Just before (northern) the Kotsifos gorge in Plakias area, is the road to the village Kali Sikia located a few kilometers to the west. The raod has on its left the gorgeous summit of Tsilivdikas and the impressive Kaliskiano gorge.
Kali Sikia, was mentioned by Fr Barozzi at his 1577 census to be comprised of two separate settlements, Pano and Kato Kali Sikia. Emm. Lamprinakis, a teacher from Rethimno, writes that in 1830 Mohamad Ali had a coal mine at Kali Sikia.
From Kali Sikia there is an up-hill new aspalt road through an impressive landscape which leads to Alones area and to the village Velonado. Experienced walkers or bicyclists will enjoy this route, which is however recommended to start from Velonado.
Every year on the first Sunday in September, the Raki Festival is celebrated on the village square in Kali Sikia. You can watch how the local spirit, Raki, is distilled and there are also tastings.
Plakias Souda is a beach 3 km west of Plakias village within the Plakias bay, 43 km southwest of Rethymnon; a lovely sandy beach, less crowded than the main beach of Plakias. The beach is well organized and affected by south winds. The rocky ends of the beach are ideal for snorkeling. Souda beach is famous for its clean water and is an optimal choice for relaxation, often visited by natives. These two lovely sandy beaches (Plakias and Souda) are located 15km west of the famous Preveli Monastery and Beach. Visitors can enjoy a comfortable stay in the hotels of the area and traditional cuisine in the local tavernas and restaurants
Selia is a small village between Rodakino and Plakias and cose to Kotsifou gorge. Standing 280m over the sea, you can walk here in one hour from Plakias. The view to every side is breathtaking and specialy to Plakias bay and to Mirthios village. It’s a sleepy traditional village with a less touristy feel than Mirthios.
There’s a cheese factory here, which produces the local cheese you can buy in all the supermarkets.
Approximately 12 km west of Sellia is the village of Rodakino, with its marvellous beach of Korakas south of the village. Although the road to Rodakino is very twisty you will enjoy the magnificent landscape.
