Plakias
Plakias 3223 hits

Plakias (Greek: Πλακιάς) is a village on the south coast of the Greek island of Crete, in the Rethymno Prefecture, about 30 kilometres south of the city of Rethymno.
It is part of the municipality Foinikas. It is surrounded by mountains to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south.
Initially a fishing jetty and a few houses, Plakias developed in the last few decades into a tourist resort. The first official notice of Plakias was in 1961, when it was mentioned in a census as the permanent home of six fishermen. The history of surrounding mountain villages like Myrthios and Sellia goes back into the 10th century, when the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas (961 AD) built roads and bridges in order to link those villages.

Kotsifos gorge located in the south of Rethymno prefecture, between the villages Kanevos and Sellia. Its total length is 1,800 meters and surrounded by vertical sides that reach a height of 600 meters.

The upper part of the gorge is crossed by the road which connect villages Rodakino and Sellia, which goes through quite impressive and wild rock cavities that create a unique landscape, allowing the passerss to admire its natural beauty.

There is also the opportunity to cross the gorge starting from Kanevos village and following the flow of the river flowing through the canyon which  dries up in summer. At a point the gorge joins that of Boutsinas forming a spectacular waterfall of 20 meters.

In the gorge there is a small stone arch bridge, three old water mills and a cavernous church dedicated to St. Onoufrio and the church of St. Nicholas which is built into a cavity of the rocks at the height of the crossing road.

Selia
Selia 3030 hits

Selia is a small village between Rodakino and Plakias and cose to Kotsifou gorge. Standing 280m over the sea, you can walk here in one hour from Plakias. The view to every side is breathtaking and specialy to Plakias bay and to Mirthios village. It’s a sleepy traditional village with a less touristy feel than Mirthios.

There’s a cheese factory here, which produces the local cheese you can buy in all the supermarkets.

Approximately 12 km west of Sellia is the village of Rodakino, with its marvellous beach of Korakas south of the village. Although the road to Rodakino is very twisty you will enjoy the magnificent landscape.
