Thronos 2890 hits

It’s a mountainous village, partially built over the ancient Sivritos. The ride through the verdant valley of Amari, full of springs and running waters, is truly idyllic. The ancient city of Sybritos is located at Thronos in the Amari valley.

Excavation at lower levels of the site has revealed that the area was probably first settled during the Late Minoan period.  Archaeologists have uncovered numerous hewn tombs that are typical of this period. At some later stage the settlement was moved uphill to Kefala Hill.  The transfer of location gave the inhabitants a complete view of the Amari valley and allowed the city to control the road linking North and South Crete.  The city reached the height of its prominence during the Roman times when it minted its own currency.  The coins, some of which are on display in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon, depict the figures of gods such as Dionyssus, Zeus and Hermes.

Agia Fotini 2887 hits

Agia Fotini is e relatively new village situated at the northern side of the Amari Valley. From Agia Foteini, the road on the left, after 1 km, leads to the village called Thronos.

The villages of the Amari are mostly small and are gathered around the slopes of the hills. There is a road that runs through most of the villages and completely circumnavigates the valley. Very few tourists come here to the Amari so you will rarely see signs for rooms to rent or tavernas with menus in English, although there are a few rooms that can be rented in Gerakari or Thronos.

Koimisi tis Theotokou (Dormition of Mother Mary) Church (Thronos)

This is a one-aisle, tile-roofed church of the 14th century, built on the ruins of an older Metropolitan church. The coats of arms of the Kallergis’ family are also found in this church, which means that it probably belonged to them. The murals dating from the 13th and 14th centuries include an impressive enthroned Madonna holding baby Jesus. The floor mosaics date to the 6th century and they are well preserved.
