Karines is only 35km from Rethymnon and less than 10 kms from the bustling mountain village of Spili, with its fountains and kafenion culture.
It is a small town of approximately 80 inhabitants but looks surprisingly lively especially during the evenings when the kafenions are well supported by young couples who like to escape notice in the larger villages.
The village is lush and green and very well treed, with massive walnut trees hanging over the water ways as well as almost every garden having fruit bearing trees and vines. It is a pretty village and quite busy over weekends when people who work in the city come to their weekend homes or to visit family. It is a sheep and goat farming area and sheep shearing despite hard work is also a festive occasion.
Situated some 30 km South of the town of Rethymno, approximately in the middle of the island of Crete, Spili has everything for the visitor who wants to experience 'natural Crete'. Mount Vorizi which hovers over the town is impressive, but wait until you walk up the side streets of this village to be really impressed.
The cobbled streets and flowering shrubs are a photographers dream. In the centre of the village is a Venetian fountain with a long row of 19 stone lions heads splashing welcome cool water into the trough below. Above this starts the climb through the beautifully quaint village streets with their flowered balconies, arches, and cobbles. Spili is on the main bus route between the north and south of the island so there are several buses a day. In the daytime it is a hive of activity being on one of the 'must see' parts of the area for tourism. In the evenings you can relax, smug, knowing that you have chosen this village to stay in and chosen well. This is walking and cycling country, with many different local routes to see and enjoy. Spili being 450 metres above sea level offers the advantage of cooler evenings, most welcome during the height of summer. The days are hot but the evenings are pure delight, just watching the local activity and the sun going down. Bicycle hire is available from Heracles Pension, situation on the right as you near the centre of the town coming from Rethymno. Spili has a special attraction those seeking the raw natural beauty of the rugged countryside which has inspired artists, painters and photographers alike throughout the ages. In late January, after a relatively short mild winter, spring bursts in to life with a spectacular display of wild flowers. Red poppies and mustard yellow flowers carpet the olive groves; on uncultivated ground wild anemone, tulips and delicate orchids bloom.
Nearby the village Patsos (Rethimno Prefecture), two caves lie hidden in the mountain region of Sorσs within a romantic, small canyon (Patsos Gorge).
It’s suspected that Patsos stands on the foundations of an ancient site. The village Patsos is to be reached via the main connection from Rethymno to the South. Shortly before the town Spili, it is then left towards Patsos, and from there (follow the signs) around 2 miles to a small parking lot, the starting point of well marked hiking trail.
The cave also represents a place of dedication as has been proved by archaeological research. It was used as an important centre of worship from the Late Minoan up until the Roman period. An inscription that was found in the cave testifies that Hermes Kraneos was worshipped here. The church in the interior of the cave is dedicated to Agios Antonios, the patron of the children. The cave is open to visitors.
There is a second, much smaller karst cave, called Fournare, 300 m north on the opposite side of the Gorge. Systematic excavations haven’t been done so far in any of the two caves, although objects from the Minoan, Greek and Roman period have been found again and again. The Patsos is a small wooded village (30km southeast from Rethimnon on a right exit at Filaki of the Amari Valley - Gerakari road) of the former province of Amari. Now is the Municipal District of Rethymno Sivritou.
Located near the foot of the hill Soros, at an altitude of 490 meters, and 14 km far from the town of Spili. Around are the villages: Karines, Spili, Gerakari. On the way from Rethymnon we meet the settlement Prasses, Potamoi (with the homonym dam), the Voliones and Pantanassa.
It has rich vegetation and produces all kinds of good quality products such as Olive oil, walnuts, cherries, fruit, citrus. All vegetation and crops are due to the many sources of water available. Patsos has good quality water throughout the year.Also, visitors can cross the path that has been designed from the village to Patsos gorge and to the Agios Antonios cave within the gorge.The Gorge of Patsos is 3km far from the settlement Patsos and is a good choice for nature lovers. You can enjoy the natural scenery of the area and have lunch, if desired, to restaurants that are within the village and at the Gorge area.
