Το Κάστρο του Άγιου Ιωάννη στη Νοτιοδυτική ακτή της Αστυπάλαιας τοποθετείται χρονικά στα βυζαντινά χρόνια. Η ανέγερση του κάστρου συμπέφτει χρονικά με την περίοδο της πειρατείας στο Αιγαίο πέλαγος. Συνηθιζόταν και στα υπόλοιπα νησιά της περιοχής η κατασκευή οχυρών τοποθεσιών μακρυά από την θάλασσα ή σε ύψωμα για την προστασία των κατοίκων από τις επιδρομές. Η τοποθεσία του κάστρου του Άι Γιάννη μπορεί να το επιβεβαιώσει. Βρίσκεται στο ψηλότερο σημείο πάνω από τη μεγάλη ομόνυμη παραλία η οποία είναι προσβάσιμη με σκάφος είτε από την ορειβατική διαδρομή.
