Aqueduct Morozini

This aqueduct is considered an important technical work for the time it was built. The “Big Castle” was supplied with water from the Archanes region. By a stone-built driver of 15 kilometers length it entered in Heraklion city, which had a terrible water shortage at that time.

Its construction took place from 1626 to 1628 AD under the supervision of Venetian officer Francisco Morozini. The waters were gathered in the place called “Pelekita”, it was one of the three water sources of the aqueduct. The two other sources were Saint Georgios and “Karydaki”. Waters from these sources merged in Virgin Mary in Karydaki, where existsthe canal bridge.

Anyone who damaged the aqueduct faced harsh penalties like exile and serving in the galleys. If the water pipelines were broken the householder of that ground was compelled to report it immediately, or else pay a heavy fine. Planting of trees in short distance was prohibited. Because of the importance of this work, a huge amount of money was spent.

The Morozini aqueduct was used during the Venetian period, and during Ottoman domination. It was abandoned in 1927.

Agia Irini 2777 hits

About 7 kilometers from Heraklion, just after the archaeological site of Knossos, there is the settlement of Agia Irini, which was added to the municipality of Heraklion in 1924 and has about 150 inhabitants.

It is a verdant place with tall pine trees and plane trees, crossed by a river that flows all year round. The imposing stoned Kamara, which is located in the settlement of Spilia, is a water transfer bridge. It was built around 1831 during the Egyptian occupation of the island.

The place took its name from the little church of St. Irini located on the eastern hill. The area is specially designed to offer pleasant moments next to nature.
