Skalia

Skalia is a coastal village, on the northwestern side of the island. It is amphitheatrically built on the mountainside, offering thus spectacular views towards the island Telendos and the islet Calabros.

It lies 18 km away from the port of Pothia and its few inhabitants are principally engaged in farming and fishing activities. Near the village, there is one of the most beautiful caves of the island, the cave of Skalia, which is rich in stalactites and stalagmites.

In Skalia you can find also the church of Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas), one of the 23 churches of the island dating from the 5th to 6th century. Inside it,  high quality frescoes have been preserved. To the west you will find the -constructed upon an ancient building- church of Agios Mamas (Saint Mamas).

The rocky morphology of Skalia and the internationally recognized climbing fields that have been developed offer an ideal destination for climbing, enjoying at the same time an admirable view towards the Aegean Sea.

Within walking distance of the Skalia lies the beach Palionissos, a lovely secluded haven of calm and relaxation.

Kalamies 2963 hits

Kalamies beach is located just before Emborios village. In there, a different feel occurs, with an ambience that will take you a little back in time, as there are still tavern tables on the pebbles, palm leafs function as umbrellas and smiling people serve you their best delicacies.

A very important advantage of Kalamies beach is its protection against strong winds and waves even in very poor weather conditions. The location of the bay along with  the small island infront of it, block quite effectively the 'entrance' of  foul weather into the beach.

In Kalamies, canoes and cayaks are offered freely to visitors, in order ride into the sea and explore the surrounding area. At the same time, there is enough room for beach racket games.

Emborios 2935 hits

The most distant village from the centre of Kalymnos, the quiet seaside village Emborios, is located in the northwestern end of the island at a distance of 19.5 km from Pothia.

The few residents have been traditionally occupied with farming and fishing, while in recent years they have started dealing with tourism as well. As a result, you will find many seaside restaurants, cafes, taverns and lodgings.

In the mountains that extend behind Emborios you will find the remains of Cyclopean walls and the remains of an ancient fort, called Kastri, which is dated from the late 4th century BC.

Kastri had a strong wall, two defense towers and a gate, and it protected thereby the area of Emborios from attacks and raids.
Inside it a dual basis of an olive press has been rescued, a finding that confirms the testimonies stating that Emborios was the first shopping center of Kalymnos.

Kasteliou Castle 2674 hits

The natural division of the Kastelli hill into two different levels was wonderfully exploited by the Kalymnians, who built a Byzantine fortress in this beautiful area in order to control the sea passage between Kalymnos and Telendos. The strategically positioned fortress was being in use until the 10th century AD, and until then it provided the Kalymnians with the ability to react directly in potential threats and defend themselves against attacks that came from land or sea.

The entrance to Kastelli was and is carried out through gates that exist in the outer wall, while the water supply was being ensured by water tanks.
