Ιερά Μονή Καψά
Η Μονή Καψά βρίσκεται στο ΝΑ άκρο της Κρήτης, στη δυτική πλευρά της εξόδου του φαραγγιού των Περβολακίων προς τη θάλασσα. Αν και η εποχή ίδρυσής της μας είναι άγνωστη, η ύπαρξη τοιχογραφικού διακόσμου, πιθανό του 13ου-14ου αι., στο κλίτος του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου, καθώς και τα χαράγματα που καλύπτουν μία μακρά περίοδο, το παλαιότερο από το 1512, έως και τον 18ο αι. το νεότερο, δίνουν ασφαλή στοιχεία για μία πρώιμη χρονολόγηση του μνημείου. Η ύπαρξη μίας μικρής τουλάχιστον μονής αποδεικνύεται επίσης από μαρτυρίες, σύμφωνα με τις οποίες κατά την επανίδρυσή της στα μέσα του 19ου αι. υπήρχαν δίπλα στον ναό δύο ερειπωμένα κελλιά. Η σύγχρονη ιστορία της μονής συνδέεται άρρηκτα με τον Ιωάννη Βιτσέντζο ή Γεροντογιάννη ο οποίος το 1844 αποφάσισε να μονάσει στον χώρο, αρχικά ζώντας ως ασκητής σε παρακείμενη σπηλιά για 17 χρόνια και αργότερα επισκευάζοντας τα υφιστάμενα κελλιά. Η αγιότητα του βίου και η φήμη του προσέλκυσαν και άλλους ασκητές, με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργηθεί μία μοναστική κοινότητα και να κατασκευαστούν επιπλέον κτίσματα. Μετά την κοίμηση του Γεροντογιάννη, ηγούμενος της μονής ανέλαβε το 1866, ο εγγονός του Ιωσήφ Γεροντάκης, ο οποίος συνέχισε το οικοδομικό έργο του προκατόχου του, όπως διαπιστώνεται και από την επιγραφή στην είσοδο του καθολικού, του 1882, που αναφέρει τόσο τον πρώτο κτήτορα, τον Γεροντογιάννη, όσο και τον Ιωσήφ. Το κτηριακό συγκρότημα της μονής αναπτύσσεται κλιμακωτά, λόγω του επικλινούς εδάφους της απότομης πλαγιάς, με επίκεντρο τον σπηλαιώδη ναό του Αγίου Ιωάννη, ο οποίος εξωτερικά διαμορφώνεται ως δίκλιτος καμαροσκεπής. Εσωτερικά, στη ΝΔ γωνία του, βρίσκεται ο τάφος του Γεροντογιάννη, ο οποίος το έτος 2004 κατατάχτηκε επίσημα στο αγιολόγιο της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας. Στον ναό διασώζονται εξαιρετικές εικόνες της Κρητικής Σχολής, όπως η Παναγία Βρεφοκρατούσα, στον τύπο της Δεξιοκρατούσας, των αρχών του 15ου αι., και ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος του 16ου αι.
The area is full with small coves with small quiet beaches, too far from busy centres. Some of the coves are very easily accessible, because the road passes just next to them.
The first easy finding beach you meet driving some 2km from Kapsa is called West Kalami and is named after the reeds (kalami in greek) that are next to it. It is a nice pebbly beach, perfect for seclusion with a spring with fresh water on the beach! There are no tall trees on the beach, but there is a big cave offering natural shade to its visitors, all day round. In order to locate that, you should note that the beach is located directly below the chapel of Agii Saranda. The beach is surrounded by high rocks, thus accessing it from the road is quite tough, but still possible.
The isolated and peaceful beach is situated at a distance of 68 kilometers far from Aghios Nicolaos at the Northeast, 33 kilometers eastern to Ierapetra and 10 kilometers eastern to the tourist resort of Makrygialos. In fact, it is not a continuous beach, but a series of small coves with pebbles. Apart from swimming and relaxing, it is worth visiting the Monastery and the gorge, whose exit is behind it.
Not organised at all, as it also happens with the rest of the beaches up to the tourist resort of Goudouras, the beach is ideal for a relaxing swim in a crystal clear cool sea, without any facilities.
