Agia Sophia mon.
Agia Sophia mon. 2975 hits

Agia Sofia Monastery is located close to Armeni village, Sitia region by Handras plateau, not far away from the historical site of the Venetian town of Etia. This interesting monastic complex survives in its largest part in ruins. The catholicon, however, is preserved well. It belongs to the type of single-nave barrel-vaulted church with two transverse reinforcing arches. In a second construction phase the church was expanded westward with a slightly elevated arched narthex, which, following the usual practice prevailing in eastern Crete, is openly connected to the main church.

No frescoes are preserved inside the church that could contribute to the dating of the monument, but it seems that both the Catholicon and the rest of the monastic complex should be dated to the Ottoman period. The monastery is currently inactive and belongs to the Parish of Armeni.

The Community of Apidia is in the Municipality of Lefki, driving past the village of Handras, 32 km from the town of Sitia and 6 km before Ziros village. Beautiful historical area and villages hidden between hills on Ziros plateau! The Community mainly includes two settlements, the Mesa Apidia settlement and the Ekso Apidia settlement. The Community of Apidia includes the settlements of Kalos Lakos, Drogari, Goudouras, Tsipa and Monastra most of them abandoned.  In the village of Dragari it is possible to see some outstanding old architecture, a combination of Byzantine, Venetian, Turkish and local elements. Apidi Gorge 2927 hits
Canyons in the region of Goudouras.
They are short in length (about 1,5 kilometres) but they are the roughest in the region and the potential hiker needs to be very careful, skillful and experienced and in many cases well-equipped.

However, their cavernous, vertical rocks create perfect sanctuaries for the avifauna and rare endemic plants are found on these steep rocks of the canyons as well. These canyons are: The Canyon of  Saint Antonis, which was named after the small church that is built in the north entrance of the canyon, which ends at Goudouras village.

There is also the canyon that begins from the village Mesa Apidi and at a particular point of its route meets a second bifurcation at the abandoned settlement called Samakidi and ends in the north of Goudouras and lastly there is the canyon of Asprolithos, which is a small, rough canyon ending up in the northwest of the village Goudouras.

Agia Ekaterini and Genessio tis Theotokou (St. Catherine & Nativity of Mary) (Armenoi)

The church of Saint Catherine is located in the abandoned village of Etia, close to the impressive Venetian mansion Dei Mezzo.

It is a two-aisled church dedicated to Saint Catherine and the Virgin Mary. The original aisle was adorned with murals. The church’s architecture and sophisticated decorative elements betray Renaissance influence, and its relief-decorated belfry is particularly impressive. In all likelihood, the church has served as both Catholic and Orthodox.
