Gournia
Gournia 2812 hits
The small beach of Gournia is located 1,5 km north of the archaeological site of Gournia, close to the main road connecting Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra and Sitia. The beach is partly secluded and has some touristic facilities. The beach is found within a small cove and is well protected from the winds.

Although not fully organised, the beach presents many advantages. Being between Istro beach (2,5 km to west) and Pachia Ammos Village and beach (3,5 km to east) and in front of a camping, it offers various accommodation facilities and good food and drink; besides, it is a nice beach. For swimming you have also the alternatives of Istro village (Karavostasi beach, Agios Pandeleimonas beach, Voulisma beach, Istro bay beach) and Pachia Ammos.

Gournia-its ancient name is unknown- is the most typical excavated example of a medium settlement size of the Minoan edge region (1700-1540 BC).
The town was established in a low hill to Isthmus of Ierapetra close to the sea. Two regional paved roads intersected by slashes to them, usually graduated, all connected to the sewerage system, define building blocks, seven of which have already been excavated.

The palace – local lord’s home – is in the top of the hill. It was its center and most probably the settlement’s market. A series of steps in the southern side was its “theatrical place” for religious ceremonial events.
